Claire N. Viens Planzo, 88, entered into eternal life on March 17 at Mercy Medical Center surrounded by her loving family. She was born on December 5, 1929, and raised in St. Albans, VT by her parents, the late Arthur and Louisia (Laroche) Viens. Claire attended Holy Angels School before she relocated to Springfield, MA in 1948. It was then that she met the love of her life, Louis A. Planzo, whom she married in 1950 and spent 64 loving years together before his passing in 2014. She was a communicant of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church where she was involved with bingo for many years. Claire had many joys in her life including spending time with her family, knitting hats for the newborn babies at area hospitals, doing crossword puzzles, baking apple pies and chicken pot pies, and gardening. She also enjoyed watching the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots with her beloved husband, Louie. Claire enjoyed many years residing in Mobile Gardens in Englewood, FL where she loved spending time with her neighbors and going to the beach. Claire was also a member of the Italian Cultural Center of Western Mass. Claire was a stay-at-home mom until her children were all in school. She worked at the New England Telephone Company, the Springfield Credit Union, Building 451, and she possibly took your lunch order at Luigi's Pizza and Pasta in Agawam. Claire leaves behind three sons, Louis and Celeste Planzo of Dennis, MA; Anthony and Elizabeth Planzo of Agawam, MA; and James and Kathleen Planzo of Agawam, MA. She also leaves to cherish her memory her 6 grandchildren: Lisa Planzo Aubin (Mark), Traci Planzo Croteau (Robert) and their mother Elaine; Anthony Planzo, Vanessa Planzo Lagace (Jason), Nicholas, and Kelsey Planzo. She also leaves behind 7 great-grandchildren: Lindsay, Steven and Anthony Aubin, Caleigh, Serena, and Andrew Croteau, and Talyn Lagace. Claire is also survived by her siblings Anita Boucher, Leo Viens, Laurette Demers, Suzanne Mangano, and Diane Viens. She was predeceased by her brothers Fernand and John Viens, and her sisters Cecile Moreau, Madeleine Noel, Theresa Miclette, Monique Champagne, Mariette Champigny, Bertha Viens, and Pauline Viens. The Planzo family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff at Mercy Medical Center for the comfort they provided to Claire during her stay there. Claire's funeral will be held Friday morning at 9 from Tazzini Funeral Home with the Rite of Christian Burial in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church at 10. The Committal Service will follow in St. Michael's Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Thursday from 4-7 p.m. Donations may be made to the Italian Cultural Center of Western Mass, Inc., 56 Margaret St., Springfield MA 01105; Parkinson's Foundation, 200 SE 1st Street, Suite 800, Miami FL 33131; or American Cancer Society, P.O. Aunt Claire was always happy to see you and greeted you with a big smile. Carol & I had a great visit with her about a month ago. She was laughing and reminiscing about years gone by. She talked about Uncle Lou a lot that day, now they are together forever....... my condolences to all the Planzo's.

Just a short note to the entire Planzo family that Kathy and I share your loss and that Claire was one person whom I can say was truly an extraordinary person, but most importantly, I knew her for over 50 years as a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Always smiling, and welcoming you into her home, it was like I had a second family. I will truly miss her, and her infectious smile. Rest in peace.

My condolences to the Planzo Family. Many memories came rushing back to me reading about Mrs. Planzo's life. Funny how they all revolve around the kitchen, food and family. Jimmy and I would pick wild blueberries at the end of the street and she'd bake us a pie or making homemade pasta on the kitchen table while her and Mr. Planzo had fresh tomatoes from the back yard cooking down for sauce. And the Easter pizza, Forget aboud it.Such a wonderful person and I'm thankful she was part of my life.Regards to Jim and Kathy, Louie, and Tony and Liz.
