Alfonse J. "Al" Alfano Jr., resident of Melrose and Windham, NH, died on Sunday, April 1, 2018 at High Pointe Hospice House in Haverhill. He was 74. Alfonse was born on February 21, 1944 in East Boston, the youngest of six children of the late Alfonse J. and Rose (Romano) Alfano. He grew up in East Boston. At the young age of 15, Al lost his father, and at that point chose to become the man of the house, helping his mother as much as he could. Al graduated from Boston English High School in 1961. Al joined the Air National Guard, serving stateside during the Vietnam War. In June of 1972, Al married his beloved Joanna M. Campanella, and they went on to share 43 wonderful years of marriage. Al worked in the banking industry, working in a number of different areas before he retired in 2013. Most important to Al was his family. He always taught his children that the most important thing in life is family. He was heavily involved in his children's lives and could be found at any one of their events supporting them and cheering them on. His grandchildren were truly his pride and joy. Travel with his family was a big deal to Al. He took his family on many different trips so they could experience not just life in the New England area, by numerous other areas around the country. Another favorite was the road trip. He relished his time in the car taking a drive to most anywhere, with anyone who wanted to go along for the ride. He recently was able to make a trip to Italy with his brother to see where their parents grew up, and to meet relatives that were there. The smile he had on his face from that trip spoke loudly as to just how much he enjoyed himself there. Of all the places they went, East Boston was always home to Al. He was proud of his time spent coming of age there. One would often find him reading numerous books about the history of East Boston. He was also a big fan of the New England Patriots and never missed a Red Sox game on the television. Al was a quiet, humble, and generous man. Even as he became ill recently, he never complained and was more concerned with the well being of others. His kindness and warmth will be deeply missed by his family and friends. His lessons and wisdom, and Italian heritage, which he was so proud of, will live on through his children and grandchildren. Al is the beloved husband of the late Joanna M. Alfano. Devoted father of Anthony J. Alfano of Peabody, Christine J. LaBrecque and her husband Keith of Salem, NH, and Nicholas J. Alfano and his wife Sara of Newburyport. Loving brother of Armando Alfano and his wife Jeanette of Biddeford Pool, ME., Anna Colarusso and her husband Augy of Danvers, JoAnn Maylor and her husband Bill of Danvers, the late Domenic Alfano and his surviving wife June of Florida, and the late Louie Alfano. Proud grandfather of Sophie, Lucy, Lucas, and Lexi. Also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends will gather in honor and remembrance of Al's life during visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Wednesday, April 4 from 4-8pm, and again on Thursday at 9am before leaving in procession to Most Blessed Sacrament Church, 1155 Main St., Wakefield for his Funeral Mass celebrated at 10am. Gifts in Al's memory may be made to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, PO Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284.

Much, much love sent to Nick, Chrissy and Anthony and all those affected by Mr. Alfano. He definitely scared me a bit during our high school years by saying very little but as Nick and I got older he was such a great guy to me.

Godspeed Mr. Alfano, thanks for the pizza and be sure to tell JoJo Butz sends his love.

I'm so sad to hear of Mr. Alfano's passing. I can remember sitting and chatting with him and Joanne in their kitchen on North Ave in Melrose on so many occasions. Mr. Alfano, Al, was always so friendly and knowledgeable. Great stories and words of wisdom were always in store for us kids while we were waiting to see Anthony, Chrissy and Nick.
One night I was there, probably aged 16 or so. I was new to the shaving razor and had a pretty good burn on my neck. I don't recall what got us into the conversation in the first place, but I remember Al advising me You know, if you shave with the grain instead of against it, you won't get burned like that. Its probably something that my own dad told me, and I ignored because I knew better. Hearing it from Mr. Alfano made all the difference. To this day, I remember that conversation pretty much every time I shave. And, its been a more pleasurable experience ever since. Its just one tiny, silly example of how a person can make such a lasting impact on someone else's life. Thank you, Mr. Alfano!
Another memory of Al was how generous he was to loan Anthony (and by extension all of us) his car. The navy-blue Chevy Celebrity logged hundreds if not thousands of miles cruising to the mall, cruising to nowhere in particular, and of course to Revere Beach. It always came with one condition. We weren't allowed to use the car phone. Yes, it was 1989 or 1990, and the built-in cellular car phone was an amazing and wonderous thing.
It is very sad for all of us here to know that Al is now gone. Its comforting though to know that he is reunited with Joanne. The two of them can sit at their little kitchen table in heaven and look down with pride at the amazing family and circle of friends they created together.

I was thinking of Al all day on April Fools Day .. I had more fun calling him each year and watching Joanna and Al fall for all of my April fools jokes. Year after year after year. I loved him . He was a wonderful neighbor for so many years. My deepest and sincere sympathy to all of the family .The one thing about Al that I will always remember and never forget. No matter how much of a hurry Al was in he would stop his car in front of our house and say hello ,a sincere hello, how are you ? how's the family ? How's Russ .Never did he ever go by without stopping if Russ and I were out front. These are the little things that make a difference in the world .Stopping to say hello !

My Dear Chrissy, Nick, & Anthony,
I am so sorry to hear about the passing of your Dad. I will always cherrish the 'good times' on the Botolph Street Hill.!.! The block parties, complete with parades, face painting, talent show and pot luck super. Your parents were the anchors of all the FUN and activities. The front door was always open and the smell of chicken cutlets & coffee were in the air.
May you be comforted by the wonderful memories and the love that surrounds you. Please know that your folks have left an idelible mark on the lives of each of the Young's. God Bless You! John & Beverly Young

To the Alfano Family:
So sorry to hear of Al's passing. As someone who grew up with Al and hung out at Pep's and Maxie's with him in East Boston, I'll remember him as a a guy I had a lot of laughs with. I'm sure he is having a few more laughs even now with Joanne, whom I'm sure he missed terribly after her passing. May they both rest in peace in the loving arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
