Stanford Pelzer, 87, of Cumberland, passed away Monday, April 9, 2018, at Atlantic Specialty Care.
Stanford Eugene Pelzer was born to Alvin S. and Jennie (Mullen) Pelzer on Sept. 13, 1930, at the family farm south of Cumberland in Cass County. He attended Maple Valley country school in his early years and received his high school diploma from the Cumberland Public School in 1949. Following graduation, he began farming with his father and brother, Gary on the family farm, until retiring in 1980. He then worked at American Buildings in Atlantic as a welder for many years.
He was united in marriage to Marjorie Ann Drager on Oct. 29, 1950, at her parent's home in Cumberland. Stanford loved life on the farm planting and harvesting the crops. He raised hogs for many years and maintained a cattle herd long after his farming ended. He always had an interest in old John Deere tractors and even restored a 1943 John Deere "B". Stanford looked forward to participating in tractor rides during his retirement.
Stanford and Marjorie regularly traveled to watch his grandchildren's high school and college sporting events. Many Saturday nights were spent at the Adams County Speedway, taking in a stock car race. Later in life, he was an avid reader and enjoyed books with a "western" theme. He also enjoyed playing cards in Grant and watching Bonanza, Gunsmoke and Andy Griffith reruns.
Stanford is survived by his wife, Marjorie of Cumberland; his children, Diane Van Haaften of Apple Valley, Minn., Steve (Becky) Pelzer of Cumberland; his sister, Ardella (Sherman) Walker of Roseville, Calif.; and sister-in-law, Phyllis Pelzer of Atlantic. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Jeff (Dawn) Van Haaften of Prior Lake, Minn., Chris (Irina) Van Haaften of Jacksonville, Fla., Aaron (Amanda) Pelzer of Norwalk, Casey (Haley) Pelzer of Atlantic, and Molly (Heath) Haner of Council Bluffs; great-grandchildren, Gracey and Nelley Pelzer of Atlantic, Audric, Aidrey and Adicus Pelzer of Norwalk, and Erik Andenko of Jacksonville, Fla.; along with nieces, nephews, and friends.
