Alma A. Benedetti, 102 of North Adams, MA died Friday April 13, 2018 at her home.
She was born in Rowe, MA on February 11, 1916, daughter of Severino and Elisabeth (Rosa) Benedetti. She attended schools in Hoosac Tunnel, Arms Academy in Shelburne Falls and graduated from Drury High School in 1933. Alma received her BS and Masters Degree from North Adams State College.
Alma began her teaching career in the town of Florida and after teaching in Clarksburg for one year, she was appointed a first grade teacher at Haskins School in North Adams. In 1956, she was appointed the art teacher for the elementary grades 1-6 in the North Adams Public Schools, remaining there until her retirement in 1981.
She was a communicant of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church and was a member of its Rosary Society. Alma also worked on its annual bazaar; served on the Parish Council and was the chairwoman of the 75th Anniversary of St. Anthony of Padua Church. Alma was a Hospice volunteer for several years and was a member of the North Adams Garden Club.
Alma enjoyed painting and sculpture and exhibited several of her works in shows throughout the area. She served on the North Adams Tree Commission; the Friends of the North Adams Public Library; and the Alumni Board of MCLA. Alma received and honorary degree from MCLA on May 30, 1999.
Alma enjoyed oil and watercolor painting, travel, playing the piano, gardening, reading and keeping in touch with family.
Survivors include one sister, Mary Caffrey of North Adams, MA and nieces , nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She was predeceased by three brothers and three sisters including Livia Primmer, Amy Zocchi, Dosolena Rhodes Law, Henry Benedetti, Rudolph Benedetti and William Benedetii.
FUNERAL NOTICE: A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Alma Benedetti will be celebrated Tuesday April 17, 2018 at 11:00 AM at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church. Burial will follow in Southview cemetery. Calling hours at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS CENTRAL CHAPEL, 74 Marshall St. North Adams, MA are Tuesday morning from 9-10:30 AM. Memorial donations may be made to St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church or HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the funeral home. So sad to read of Miss Benedetti's passing. She was such a nice lady. I remember her from church but also as my art teacher in grammar school. My thoughts are with her family.
