Larry Dean Harvey
Jan. 11, 1948 - April 28, 2018
Larry Harvey, emphatic philosopher, brother, father and uncle passed away from the effects of a massive stroke surrounded by his loving family. During his illness he was perpetually attended to by dozens of friends and Burning Man compatriots. Born and raised in Portland, Larry was adopted as an infant by Author S. "Shorty" and Katherine Harvey (Langford). He was raised with his adopted older brother Stewart on a modest acreage in the semi-rural farmland north of Parkrose. The brothers were inseparable and welcomed by the sprawling Harvey and Langford families who had migrated West during the Depression. Larry was strongly influenced by the "frontier values" of his devoted parents.
A graduate of Parkrose High School, Larry was a voracious reader. From the earliest age he was consumed by the desire to achieve something original in the world, but nothing he studied in school seemed to match the ideas churning in his head. A "proto" hippy, Larry and his longtime companion Janet Lohr traveled around the west for several years before finally moving to San Francisco in 1974, where he lived for the rest of his life. He was briefly married to Patricia Johnson in the early 1980s, and they had a son Tristan in 1982. Larry was a loving parent to Tristan and Tristan's older siblings Dante Chisholm and Zan Naar.
In 1986, seized by an unexplained inspiration, he called a friend and said, "Let's build a wooden man and burn it on Baker Beach for solstice." Burning Man was born! After moving "The Man" to Nevada's Black Rock Desert in 1990, Larry foresaw, "an event driven as much by the creativity of its participants as the ingenuity of its organizers." Over the next 30 years, Larry, supported by an innovative team of collaborators, worked tirelessly to turn the Burning Man Festival into a global celebration of individual and community based art and culture.
Larry is survived by his children, Tristan Harvey, Dante Chisholm and Zan Naar; his brother, Stewart Harvey and wife, Lynda; his nephew, Bryan Harvey, his wife, Naomi and daughter, Alyssa. Larry was loved and will be missed by his family and the entire Burning Man community.

Mark 6:10
stay there until you leave that place: Jesus was instructing his disciples that when they reached a town, they should stay in the home where hospitality was extended to them and not be transferring from house to house. (Lu 10:1-7) By not seeking a place where the householder could provide them with more comfort, entertainment, or material things, they would show that these things were of secondary importance when compared to their commission to preach.
