Neil G. McCormick, 90, a resident of Framingham, MA for 45 years, died Tuesday, May 15, 2018, at Genesis Keene Center in Keene, NH, with family by his side.

He was the husband of 46 years to Kazuko (Sakahara) McCormick, who died in 2004.

Born and raised in Everett, WA, he was the son of the late Glenn and Georgie (DeLude) McCormick.

He was a graduate of the University of Washington, earning a B.S. in Chemistry, and a M.S. and Ph.D. in Microbiology. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship for the NIH at the University of Wisconsin, and was an Assistant Professor at the University of Virginia for 6½ years. From 1968 until his retirement in 1992 he worked as a Research Microbiologist at the U.S. Army Natick Laboratories, where his research included investigating methods for the microbial decomposition of munitions waste.

Upon retiring his lab coat and microscope, Dr. McCormick took up volunteering wholeheartedly and with tremendous enthusiasm. He participated in the Jimmy Fund Boston Marathon Walk 15 times, completing his final 26-mile walk at age 85(!)  He was a devoted volunteer for 15 years at A Place to Turn food pantry in Natick, MA. For 25 years he was a judge at the Massachusetts State Science Fair Finals at MIT, and the Mass. Jr. High State Science Fair Finals in Worcester. He was a very active member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Framingham, serving in many capacities including tenor in the choir for 45 years.

A performer at heart, he tapped into one of the greatest passions of his life when he joined the Sudbury Savoyards, the community theater group that quickly became like a second family.  He was proud to have performed in all 13 of the Gilbert & Sullivan operettas in his 24 years with his beloved Savoyards. His smile, generosity, and sense of humor, including his awful puns, will be missed by everyone who knew him.

He leaves his children, Kim L. McCormick and partner Brian Gallien, of Marlow, NH, Evan T. McCormick and partner Ellen Brockley, of Newton, and Duane E. McCormick and wife Lynne, of Attleboro; three grandchildren, Claire and Grace Bradham, and Brendan McCormick; and multiple nieces and nephews. Two brothers, Duncan and Larry McCormick, predeceased him.

His family wishes to thank the staffs at New Horizons Marlborough, Hearthstone at Marlborough, and Genesis Keene Center, for their compassionate care and support during his final years. Pshaw, pshaw.

Visiting hours are Thursday, May 24, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church, 80 Beacon St., Framingham, followed by a memorial service at 6 with the Rev. Heather Kattan officiating.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Norton Funeral Home, 53 Beech St., corner of Union Avenue, in Framingham.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in his memory may be made to “A Place to Turn” 99 Hartford Street, Natick, MA 01760, or “Save a Dog” 604 Boston Post Road, Sudbury, MA 01776.
