Elsie Liliequist Allen
Louisville - 96, of Louisville, died of natural causes on May 20th, 2018.
Elsie was born to Swedish parents, Carl and Hulda Liliequist, on November 3, 1921, in Chicago, Illinois. She graduated from Danville High School in Danville, Kentucky, in 1939 and received her R.N. degree from the Kentucky Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in 1945. In 1946, she married Charles E. Allen, Jr., M.D., a surgeon, U.S. Army medical officer, and plant physician at Ford Motor Company's Louisville plants. They were happily married for 59 years and had one son, Chuck, born in 1948.
Elsie was a dedicated registered nurse who worked extensively in the nursery at the Kentucky Baptist Hospital. Her nursing skills and devotion helped her husband survive a major heart attack at age 37 and helped her son survive thyroid cancer at age 27. Elsie was a passionate and skilled bridge player who founded four bridge clubs in the 1950s and 1960s, one of which still exists. She traveled to 40 states, Canada, Mexico, England, France, Switzerland, and Italy, antiqued in many states with her best friend, the late Rose Clark, and regularly spent holidays and summer vacations with her beloved sisters, the late Margaret Nielsen and late Betty Skapin, both of Ohio. Elsie was an avid golfer and enjoyed football weekends with her husband and son at the University of Kentucky for 29 seasons. She has been a member of Harvey Browne Memorial Presbyterian Church since 1954 and a member of Big Spring Country Club since 1964.
Elsie is survived by her devoted son, Charles E. Allen, III, of Louisville, an attorney and past president of local and national astronomy organizations. He wishes to express his very special appreciation to Yvonne Harrod of Brightstar who provided loving care and support for his mother during weekday afternoons and to the nurses and staff of Hosparus of Louisville.
Funeral service will be noon Friday at Pearson Funeral Home, 149 Breckenridge Lane. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday and 11:00 a.m. until the time of services Friday at Pearson's, with burial at Cave Hill Cemetery to follow.
