Private funeral services for Dorothy Vernell Russell were held Thursday, May 31, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Thompson Funeral Home with Mr. Gary McCurdy officiating. Burial followed at Piedmont Memory Gardens. Mrs. Russell passed away Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at her home. Survivors include her children, Donna Jordan (Derrel), Cindy McFry (Greg) , Kay Pope (Charlie Fagan) and Doug Russell (Lanette); four grandchildren, Jason Jordan, Brandon McFry, Micah Russell and Seth Russell; six great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and her caregivers, Lisa Russell,Carole Hill, Gentry Hill, Susan King, Terri Surrett, Sherri Williamson and Becky Buttram. Pallbearers were family. Mrs. Russell was a longtime resident of Piedmont and was a graduate of Spring Garden School Class of 1949. She sold Avon in Piedmont and the surrounding area for 44 1/2 years. She enjoyed working outside, traveling and meeting and talking to people. At an early age she learned to play the guitar and won a talent show when she was nine years old. Mrs. Russell was preceded in death by her husband, Donald "Lake' Russell, and a granddaughter, Allison Pope. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, North Alabama Chapter, Century Office Center, 3322 S. Memorial Pkwy, Suite 16, Huntsville, AL 35801.

I'm sorry for Piedmont's loss... Vernell got me started selling Avon many years ago. The last time I saw her coming out of a store as I was going into, she still recognized me and was as friendly as ever. I don't get much Piedmont news and didn't know she was ill; I'm so sorry. May the Lord give the family and friends peace during this time.
