Joseph William Dougherty

Joseph William Dougherty Jr. passed away peacefully on June 13, 2018, in the company of his children, his friends, and his loving wife, Dianne Kobyrynka. Joe was born and raised in Northeast Philadelphia and graduated from St. Joe's Prep and St. Joseph's University (class of '68) as well as the University of North Carolina. Joe lived in Media for the past decade, where he served as Vice President of the Homeowners Association of Rose Tree Village. He was a faithful parishioner at Nativity BVM Catholic Church, as well as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Mother of Providence Regional Catholic School. He is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Anne Dougherty (nee Garrity), and is survived by his wife Dianne as well as his five children and their spouses – Joe, Terry and his wife Jamie, Christopher, Erin and her husband Jim, and Kevin and his wife Lauren – as well as his two grandsons, Brendan and Brian Dougherty, along with a multitude of loving cousins. Joe had a long and distinguished career, first as a professor of English Literature at Wesley College in Dover DE, and then as Dean of Continuing Education at York College and DeSales University in Center Valley PA. More than twenty years ago, Joe left academia to found his own consulting firm, GOALS Inc., through which he counselled and coached senior executives in the telecom and healthcare industries, in countries around the world. He made more than 40 trips to China in the course of his work, as well as multiple trips to the UK and other parts of Europe, earning the respect and friendship of many clients and colleagues along the way. Joe reveled in his Irish heritage, enjoyed music and the spoken word, and loved his Superbowl Champion Eagles – he was a season ticket-holder for 43 years. Calling hours will be held from 9 to 11:00am on Tuesday, June 26, 2018 at Nativity BVM Catholic Church, 30 East Franklin Street in Media, followed by a funeral mass at 11:00am.
