Joseph "Joe" Polking N. Charleston - Joseph Claude Polking (Joe) of Charleston, SC died peacefully on June 8 2018, at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX, surrounded by loving family. He was 79 years young, Joe is predeceased by his parents, Clement and Anne Polking of Breda, IA, and his brother, Bill, formerly of Carroll, IA. He is survived by his irascible wife and friend, Lynn; brothers Jim, John (Stevie), Paul (Joan), and sister in law, Peggy, widow of brother, Bill; and a multitude of wonderful, loving nieces, nephews and friends. That Joe is survived by several adoring feline companions is an understatement - he cared for and cherished them all, for which Lynn is forever grateful! Joe was an undergraduate of Notre Dame University in South Bend, IN and earned his JD from Catholic University in Washington, DC. His professional career was spent at the Federal Maritime Commission in Washington, DC, where he rose over his 30 plus years of federal service from staff attorney to Secretary of the Commission. Joe was most often described as a "gentle soul", and he was. He loved the Washington Redskins, golf, and more recently, the Washington Nationals, in that order. He followed his teams faithfully, until the day before he died and will probably continue to do so wherever he is now. Joe was slow to anger, quick to forgive, lived in the present and loved large. He will be greatly missed. Expressions of sympathy may be viewed or submitted to www.mcalister-smith.com. Lynn, deepest condolences to you and Joe's family. I know this recent family reunion you've just attended wasn't the same without him, yet it was likely a great opportunity for everyone to share happy memories of him as well as support one another. May your own sweet memories of Joe sustain you and help to lift you up from your sorrow so that you can go on without him, as he most surely would wish you to do. And though he may not be physically present, he will never really be far from you, because he is alive in your heart. Rest in peace, Joe. You were one in a million.

Psalm 90:10 says that the days of our years are 70 years, And of because of special mightiness they are 80 years. May the memories of the wonderful times you shared together bring a smile and joy in your heart.
