STATESBORO, Ga. -- Mr. Wayman Billy Newman, age 84, passed away at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Mr. Newman, a Bulloch County native, was born in Register, Ga., and raised in Brooklet, Ga. He graduated from Brooklet High School in 1952 and was a veteran of the United States Army.
Mr. Newman worked several years for the Union Bag and Paper Company before retiring with 30 years of service from Lockheed Aircraft Company.
In his spare time, he loved to hunt, fish and work with his hands, especially wood-working. He enjoyed watching the Atlanta Braves and the Atlanta Falcons on television, telling jokes and having fun with his family.
He was a member of the Pine View Baptist Church in Martinez, Ga.
Mr. Newman was preceded in death by his parents, Harley Willis and Mattie Okellar Stevens Newman; infant daughter, Julie Christine Newman; brothers, Willis Newman, Lavon Newman; and an infant brother, Linton Talmadge Newman.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Mrs. Martha Jo Newman, Statesboro; sons, Greg Newman (Tamra), Statesboro; and Ray Newman (Debbie), Atlanta; daughter, Pam Jones (Donnie), Salem, Ala.; seven grandchildren, Scott Newman (Kathryn), Stilson; Russell Newman (Kelli), Statesboro; Reed Newman (Kelly), Atlanta; Matthew Newman, Atlanta; Amanda Cooper (Andrew), Roswell; Macy Lammert and Reagan Lammert, both of Columbus; 10 great-grandchildren, sister, Fay Brown, Savannah; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A gathering of friends and family will be held Wednesday evening, June 20, 2018, from 6-8 p.m. at Hodges-Moore Funeral Home.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 21, 2018, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Hodges-Moore Funeral Home with Pastor Larry Cone officiating. Burial will be in the Brooklet City Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews.
The family would like to extend a very special "thank you" to personal caregivers Julie, Donna and Edna. Thank you ResCare and Arcadia Hospice for your kind and compassionate care as well.
Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Newman's honor to the Alzheimer's Association, Coastal Region Office, 201 Television Circle, Savannah, GA 31406.
