Edward Joseph Mitchell, Sr.
Brewster - Edward Joseph Mitchell, Sr., age 90, died peacefully at his home of 60 years in Brewster, NY on September 11, 2018. Ed was born on May 1, 1928 son of William and Cecilia (O'Connor) Mitchell. He honorably served in the US Army.
Ed married the love of his life, Mary Leonard on May 26, 1951 in the Bronx, NY. Mary predeceased her husband on July 22, 2009. He was employed and worked for over 23 years with A&P in Elmsford, NY. He also worked for Metro North Railroads for over 10 years. Ed was an avid traveler and a huge Yankee fan. He was a member of the VFW Post #672 of Brewster and in his earlier years a little league coach.
Ed moved his family to Brewster in 1958 and was an original homeowner in Brewster Heights. His family life centered around the communities of St. Lawrence O'Toole Church and the VFW. Ed was devoted to his family and very proud of his seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Ed is survived by his four loving children, Pat Mitchell of Beacon Falls, CT, Mary T. Lockwood (Robert) of Wappingers Falls, NY, Edward J. Mitchell Jr. of Brewster, NY and William J. Mitchell of Beacon Falls, CT. He is also survived by his seven grandchildren; Steven, Matthew, Jennifer, Kevin, Trisha, Edward III and Tyler and nine cherished great-grandchildren; Hayley, Cassidy, Kelsi, Adam, Kyle, Dylan, Cameron, Brynn and Cole. Also several nieces and nephews. Ed was pre-deceased by five sisters; Cecilia Bernhardt, Catherine Kozlowski, Mary Kozlowski, Dolores Murray, Theresa Yacuik.
A Mass of Christian of Burial will be celebrated on Monday, September 17, 2018 at 10:00 am at St. Lawrence O'Toole Church in Brewster, NY. Ed will then be brought to his final resting place at St. Lawrence O'Toole Cemetery in Brewster, NY. Family will receive friends at the Beecher Funeral Home, 1 Putnam Avenue, Brewster, NY from 2-6 pm Sunday, September 16, 2018. He will be greatly missed.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice Care of Westchester and Putnam county Inc., 540 White Plains Rd., Suite 300, Tarrytown, NY 10591.
