Linda Schneider Obituary

Groton - Linda E. (McGill) Schneider of Groton, passed away lovingly surrounded by her family at her home on Thursday, Sept. 13, 2018.

Born on Oct. 17, 1950, in Newport, R.I., she was the daughter of the late James McGill and Dorothy (Vosper) McGill. She lived in Groton for the past 64 years.

She graduated from Fitch High School in 1968. After attending UConn and obtaining her master's degree in education from Southern Connecticut State University, she taught at Sacred Heart School in Groton for 25 years. She was known as a strict but compassionate and loving teacher while teaching Pre-K, first grade and fourth grade throughout her career. She also served on the Sacred Heart Parish Council for many years, volunteered at St. Joseph's Church in New London, and until recently was a member of the Groton Beach & Parks Committee.

She was married to Paul Schneider on Oct. 7, 1972; he passed away in 1997.

Her most cherished role in life was as a mother and grandmother and she will be greatly missed by her family, who she always put first. The last eight years of her life as "Grammy" brought a happiness and joy to her like no other.

She leaves behind her son, Bryan Schneider (Elizabeth) of Stonington; her daughter, Bethany Lyons (Eric) of Mystic; four grandchildren, Ava Lyons, Wes Lyons, Addison Lyons and Lila Schneider; and her brother, Robert McGill (Bonnye) of Florida. She also leaves her "S.O." for the past 10 years, Rick Mears.

Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, at the Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl St., historic downtown Mystic. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, at St. Joseph's Church in New London. Burial will follow at Colonel Ledyard Cemetery, Groton.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Linda's memory may be made to The American Heart Association or the St. Joseph's (New London) Capital Campaign.

To Linda's Family,

I first met Linda at West Side Junior High back in the 1960s. She was such a nice girl and so lovely and always had a warm, inviting smile for all!

As the years flew by, we both remained in beautiful Eastern Point, and my husband & I would bump into Linda and her beloved family every so often.

She is now at peace and enjoying being back together with loved ones that went before her.

Godspeed Linda...

With our heartfelt sympathy,

Beth, Bryan, and Rick I offer you my condolences and prayers. I just found out at school today. I didn't even know that Linda was ill so I was quite shocked. Your mom and I had many laughs over the years at Sacred Heart. I will miss driving past her house and pulling over to chat if she was outside. She will be missed.

Rick, Bob and all of Linda's family: I'm shocked and so very sorry to hear of Linda's passing. I first knew her when we worked together at the Groton/New London Airport. She was the agent at Hertz, I was at Avis and our friend Kathy (now deceased) worked at National Car Rental. We worked the evening hours together and kept each other entertained at what would otherwise have been a boring job. We lost touch for a time after she left the airport. I suppose we were busy with family and careers But I would still run into her periodically at the supermarket or area restaurants. Most recently, we saw each other regularly at the Groton Library, she with grandchildren and me with my great grandson. She never lost that sense of fun and ready laugh even though our friendship spanned more than forty years.I will miss those chance meetings and the exchange of hugs and pleasantries. Rest in peace, my friend.
