Victor H. Simon III
Milford, OH - Victor H. Simon III passed away suddenly at his home in Milford , Ohio on May 20, 2018. He was 72 years old. Vic was born in Springfield , Missouri to parents Victor H. Simon, Jr. and Patricia A. Simon. In 1958 he became Springfield's, and one of the Nation's, youngest Eagle Scouts earning Scouting's highest rank shortly after his twelfth birthday. He would go on to earn a total of 57 merit badges, two silver and one bronze Eagle palms, the Ad Altare Dei emblem, and be inducted into the Order of the Arrow.
After graduating from Parkview High School, Vic attended the Missouri School of Mines And Metallurgy (now Missouri University of Science and Technology) in Rolla, Missouri where he joined the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Physics followed by a Master of Science degree in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.
Vic then joined the United States Air Force, attended basic officer training at Lackland Air Force Base, and served at Stewart, Offutt, Peterson and Wright-Patterson bases during his enlistment.
Upon completion of his duty with the Air Force, Vic joined General Electric Aviation's Jet Engine Division in Evendale, Ohio. Vic progressed through a number of positions of increasing technical and then managerial responsibility in both Evendale, Ohio and Lynn, Massachusetts and his progression further included a posting to Paris, France to support GE's joint venture with Safran Aircraft Engines. Vic became head of engineering for GE Aviation Services and was recognized by former GE CEO Jack Welch in his book Jack: Straight From the Gut as "one of the best design engineers in the business".
Vic did not slow down after his retirement from GE. He continued to pursue his hobby of finding and restoring antique engines to running condition and driving one of his trio of sports cars. He always had a multitude of projects underway and with photographic memory for jokes always kept those around him laughing.
While Vic's scholastic and professional journey were of epic proportions, one of his greatest joys was to mentor his two sons and impart his wisdom. Whether it were advice on how to navigate the politics of the corporate world, how to wire in a new circuit, or the best way to fix a motor, he was always there to lend a hand, an ear, or offer sage advice: he never faltered or wavered at being one of the best fathers and friends. The World has lost a truly great man, father, friend; he will be sorely missed.
Vic is survived by his son Victor H. Simon, IV and his wife, Teri, of Royersford, Pennsylvania; his son Dr. Edmund Simon of Atlanta, Georgia; his sister Christine Simon Cowden and her husband, Jim, of Austin, Texas; and his brother Andrew D. Simon and his wife, Becky, of Suquamish, Washington. He is also survived by a grandson, Derek; two nieces, Carter Cowden and Avery Cowden Nelson; and a nephew Andrew J. Simon.
"Now cracks a noble heart. Goodnight, sweet prince;
And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest."

I supported Vic my last year at GE. He was without a doubt the most intelligent man I've met/worked with and I am very proud to have known him.

I was the Lead Development Test Engineer on the GE F18/F414 Engine Program. Vic was an inspiration as the Program Manager and I loved his style of management which is sorely missed in today's engineering community! You were the "Best" Vic!

Vic and I were cousins as our grandmothers were sisters. Even though he was four years older than me, he was always very nice to me at holiday gatherings. I haven't seen Vic since he left Springfield for college but he was always very smart and I'm not at all surprised to read of all his accomplishments and awards. RIP Vic, your's was indeed a life well lived.
