Gordon Smith Obituary

Gordon "Bud" Hanley Smith, Jr. went home to the Lord surrounded by his family on October 20, 2018 at the age of 89. He battled cancer for many years, but never quit living life. He "fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith."

Bud was born on July 6, 1929, an only child, to Gordon Hanley Smith and Nelia Mai Gregory Smith. He grew up in Edcouch-Elsa, graduating from high school in 1946. He graduated from The University of Texas at Austin with a BBA in 1950 and remained a steadfast Longhorn fan throughout his life. Bud was not a big singer, but he never failed to sing The Eyes of Texas with his "horns up."

He is survived by his wife, Jimmie Alice Moseley, of 69 years, with whom he had 3 daughters, Bonnie (Dennis) Whitley of Alice, Carrie (JN) Wall of Houston, and Alice (Kurt) Rosenhagen of Nassau Bay, 7 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. He was manager and part owner of Factory Outlet Building Materials and SE Builders for 32 years. He was an organizer and charter member of the Board of Directors for First Community Bank of Texas, began his second career as Business and Development Consultant for First Community Bank of Texas in 1997 and served faithfully until his death. He was respected and beloved by all his bank family.

Bud has served as director of Alice Chamber of Commerce, President of Jim Wells Master Planners Assoc., Urban Renewal Board, President of Alice Rotary, 1968-1969 and a Paul Harris Fellow, Elder & Trustee of First Presbyterian Church, Board of Governors Alice Country Club, Board of Directors Alice Camp Fire Girls, member of the Alice Chapter of the Texas Exes Association, charter member of Coyote Cooks and manager/director of Alice Food Pantry for 20 years. Bud was named Citizen of the Year in 2001 and continued to be a pillar of the community.

He was an avid hunter and a real crack shot. He enjoyed golfing with his sons-in-law, grandsons and the Fun Bunch, watching the Longhorns and Alice Coyotes plus watching sports of any kind on TV.

Family will receive friends at Holmgreen Mortuary on Friday, October 26, 2018 from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm.

A celebration of life service will be held at First United Methodist Church on Saturday, October 27, 2018 at 2:00 pm with Pastor Kris Bair and Father Tom Turner officiating. If you chose, wear burnt orange in honor of Bud's loyalty to The University of Texas and the Alice Coyotes.

Family would like to thank all the caregivers and nurses who provided excellent care, including Priscilla Bueno, Melissa Rochester, Marivel Renteria, and Nadia Blanco.

In lieu of flowers, family requests donations be made to Alice Volunteer Services/Alice Food Pantry, PO Box 1966, Alice, Texas 78333, First Presbyterian Church, PO Box 986, Alice, Texas 78333, or to a charity of your choice in memory of Bud Smith.

Arrangements are entrusted to Holmgreen Mortuary, 2061 E. Main St., Alice, Texas.
