Smigiel, Richard Alan "Rick" Richard Alan "Rick" Smigiel of Kalamazoo, Michigan died unexpectedly in his home on Friday, October 19, 2018. Rick was born April 23, 1956 in Midland, son of Joseph and Berniece (Wazny) Smigiel. A 1974 graduate of Midland High School, Rick went on to receive his B.B.A. from Western Michigan University in 1987. While at WMU, Rick began his 35-year career as a dedicated employee with UPS as a part-time package sorter moving through the ranks to become an on-car supervisor. Rick married the former Beth Ann Rahn, to whom he was a devoted husband for 34 years, on May 12, 1984 in Midland. He is survived by his wife Beth, parents Joseph and Berniece (Wazny) Smigiel, brother Paul Smigiel (Barb), sisters Dianne Gentel (James) and Debbie Ballard, and his best friend Abe. Rick was preceded in death by his brother Gregory Smigiel. Rick is also survived by his mother-in-law, Bernice Rahn, and sisters-in-law, Teri Gann (Dave), and Nancy Devereaux (Pat), as well as nieces and nephews. He was the 50th grandchild of Michael and Mary Wazny. Rick was always an exuberant, cheerful, and helpful friend to everyone. Except for the times when he was alone with Beth and Abe, his happiest times were when he was at the lake working on projects at the family cabin, or helping neighbors. Rick loved the outdoors, whether it was hiking, hunting, fishing, or just doing yard work. He eventually became an awesome smallmouth bass fisherman, at least in his own mind. He also did his best to keep the State lottery solvent, never giving up hope that his big win would be in next week's drawing. The family and friends that had Rick in their lives were the real winners in the lottery of life. Memorial services will take place at 11:00 a.m., Friday, October 26, 2018 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 3109 Swede Ave., Midland. Father John Sarge will officiate. Visitation at the church will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Friday until time of service. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Directors. www.wswfh.com

We at Harding's on West Main share your grief in the passing of Rick. We all loved his wonderful warm smile and cheerful award winning smile, even when we had to tell him he was a "non-winner on the lottery" rather than a loser. We have shared many wonderful stories about your family and the love he had for all of you. He will be missed by many here at the store. My prayers go out to you at this difficult time. Remember the good times and share his legacy with all. He will not be forgotten. Lovingly, Janie

Beth,
I was so sorry to hear about Rick. He was such a bright spot in our lives. He always had a smile and a laugh. I used to see him walking the dog Abe and ask how he was doing. I am devastated over the sad news. Please know that I am thinking of you. Feel free to call me if you need anything. Your birthday buddy, Val.

So sorry to hear about Rick. He was my best friend during Junior High and we spent a lot of time together, in and out of school. He had an incredible sense of humor and was always kind and considerate. I think that's why we became quick friends. Till we meet again Louie. Greg White.

I was so saddened to learn of Rick's passing today. His brother Greg passed many years earlier and was my best friend in High School. I was blessed to spend time with many in the Smigiel family and they are all just wonderful people. Please accept my condolences and may God bless all of you during this trying time in your lives..

We have known Rick for several decades as out friend and neighbor at KP Lake. It was always a joy when Rick and Beth were up at the lake. You could always count on Rick to call over with a funny line or pun. If I helped him with any chores, he would show up later with some food he made or a gift. He was always very thoughtful. If he was taking his trash to the dump he would yell over and ask if he could take mine.
KP Lake will never be the same without our very special friend and neighbor. We will miss him very much.
Our heart and thoughts go out to you Beth and Family. We are sorry. Rick was a great guy.
