Sandra Mettetal Obituary

Sandra (Sandy) L. Mettetal of Thurmont, MD passed away on October 25, 2018 at the Frederick Memorial Hospital while a patient in the hospice program. She was the loving wife of Richard (Dick) Mettetal for 52 years and the guardian of Patty Meekins.

Born in Lancaster, PA on July 24, 1943, she was the daughter of the late Cletus and Elva Cunningham. She loved to travel and lived in several different states while accompanying her husband in his navel career. Her pleasant, cheerful attitude and willingness to assist whenever needed resulted in many friends wherever she lived. She assisted with Girl Scout troops and many other community service organizations. She was a life member of the AMVETS Auxiliary, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for 39 years, a member of the Fleet Reserve Association for 30 years, a member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary, and a member of the American Association of Retired Persons.

She worked for many years for the Tourism Council of Frederick County, Inc. and then took a position with the State of Maryland, Department of Economic and Employment Development as a Supervisor in the Division of Tourism Development. She was both a state and national Certified Travel Counselor. She taught many new travel counselors in various rest area information centers across the state. Sandy really enjoyed her work and her devotion to the position led her to be selected to travel out of state to promote Maryland's travel and tourism industry in numerous seminars, symposiums, and travel/tourism shows. Her final assignment was as the Supervisor of the information center at the newly constructed rest area on U.S. Route 15, just south of Emmitsburg. She retired after more than 25 years working in the travel and tourism field.

In her spare time, Sandy loved to play Bingo with her friends and family and visit the slot machines at casinos throughout Maryland, West Virginia, and Atlantic City, NJ.

In addition to her husband, Sandy is survived by Patty Meekins with Jack Willard, her brother Phillip Cunningham and wife Dawn, her nephew Phillip Cunningham, Jr. and wife Mercedes. Sandy also has three wonderful and loved Godchildren, Bill Meekins III and wife Lindsey, Aaron Meekins and wife Tracy, and Kelsey Roderick and husband Josh. Sandy loved the children of her Godchildren: Elena, Wesley, Xavier, Wyatt, and Whitley as if they were her own grandchildren.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 4, 2018 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Stauffer Funeral Home, 104 East Main Street in Thurmont. Funeral services will be held at 11a.m. on Monday, November 5, 2018 at the funeral home. The Reverend Doctor Mary Ricketts will officiate. Sandy will be laid to eternal rest in Brown's Cemetery, Foxville, MD.
