Mrs. Helen Hope Buchholtz, age 91, passed way on October 27, 2018. Helen is survived by her daughter, Hope, son-in-law, Troy, and grand daughters, Fiona and Annabel, of Brooklyn, NY; her son, Daniel, of Clearwater, FL; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews in the U.S., Ireland, and Australia. She was predeceased by her husband, John Buchholtz, in 2014.
Helen was born in Cork, Ireland to Helen and Daniel Bergin, and immigrated to America with her family at the age of four. She graduated from St. Brendan's High School in Brooklyn and The Traphagan School of Fashion in Manhattan, where she studied costume design and illustration. During World War II, she received a commendation from the American Red Cross for meritorious personal service. She had a career in New York as a fashion illustrator until 1972, when she moved to Nokomis, FL with her husband and two young children.
She was a talented artist and seamstress, and loved researching her family history, which she was able to trace back hundreds of years. She took great pride in her granddaughters, and looked forward to their frequent visits. She touched many lives with her outgoing and positive nature, and her perpetual willingness to help those in need. She will be deeply missed.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Tidewell Hospice of Sarasota. The family of Helen Buchholtz is grateful for the tremendous and loving care that the good people of Tidewell Hospice provided to her.
