James Murphy Obituary

James (Jim) Murphy, 73, gentle and loving husband, father, Grampy, brother and friend died November 30, 2018 in Falmouth, Mass. Known affectionately as Murph and Jimmy, Jim's love for the ocean was only surpassed by his love for family and friends. His favorite toast was, "To friends. To family. To friends who are family." A lifelong New Silver Beach summer resident, Jim met his wife Jane (Donahue) Murphy at the beach in 1966 and they were married at St. Patricks Church in Falmouth. They raised their three children in Longmeadow, Mass., spending all their summers at New Silver and moving there permanently in retirement. The happiness that defined their 50-year marriage was best measured by their unending laughter. Jim's embrace of fun was infectious and his big personality invited everyone in to the party where he and his friends were known to entertain the crowd with "Mac the Knife." His other unique skills included putting lobsters to sleep, exceptional popsicle eating, enjoying roller coasters with his kids and grandkids, capturing bats, mad boat docking capability, and inventing Murph McMuffins. Jim was a star athlete at Archbishop Williams High School ('63 Athletic Hall of Fame) and at Syracuse University. His work ethic and dedication led to numerous awards in collegiate football. Jim was honored to have played in the Blue-Grey Bowl, Senior Bowl, and the Gator Bowl while at Syracuse, and he cherished the lifelong friendships he made with his teammates. He later played for the Hartford Knights while working multiple jobs to support his young family. Jims incredible athleticism and love for both sport and sportsmanship were passed on to the next generation through his three children, five grandchildren, and the countless kids he coached. He taught P.E. in Enfield, Conn. and Springfield, Mass. and between 1980 and 2016 coached | as his sons and daughter put it | "everything but lacrosse": track, wrestling, football, basketball (girls and boys), and baseball. He most loved coaching his children's teams and, even as his health declined, helped coach one of his granddaughters basketball teams to an undefeated season. As a coach, Jim fostered mutual respect between players and coaches, leading with encouragement, empathy and heart. He inspired so many of his childrens friends to both play and coach. Jim was also very proud to be a builder and contractor. He built homes in western Mass. and on Cape Cod, finding great joy in the creative, collaborative, outdoor process. Jim, Jimmy, Murph, Dad, Grampy He loved and was- is-loved. Can there be anything more important in life? He is pre-deceased by his parents Edward and Agnes Murphy of Quincy and Falmouth and dear brother Edward Murphy of Barnstable. He is survived by his wife Jane of North Falmouth; son Michael Murphy and his wife Maureen of Wilmington, Del; son Dennis Murphy and his wife Beth of North Falmouth, Mass.; daughter Brianna Murphy of Boston; five precious grandchildren -Trip, Wilson, Maggie, Quinn and Isabelle; brother Kevin Murphy and his wife Karen of North Falmouth; sister Maryanne Murphy of Quincy and North Falmouth; brother Joe Murphy and his wife Kathy of Wethersfield, Conn. and Falmouth; and an extraordinary number of wonderful nieces, nephews, and dear friends friends who are family. Finally, the family wants to warn anyone with DAngelos stock that the company has lost its best tuna sub customer. Visiting hours will be from 4 | 7 p.m. on Tuesday, December 4, in the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home, 584 West Falmouth Hwy. (Rte. 28A), West Falmouth. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, December 5, in the St. Elizabeth Seton Church, 481 Quaker Road, North Falmouth, MA. Very sorry to hear of Mr. Murphy's passing. He was a highly respected teacher in Enfield's Kosciusko Junior High School back in the seventies and that was not easy statues to attain. I'll always be thankful he took the time and taught me how to snap a football for long snaps, and I in turn taught my boys the exact same way. His gym classes were always fun and he allowed us to enjoy being there. He was a big man with a big heart and great roll model for his students. Thank you for the great memories Mr. Murph Rest In Peace.

My best junior high school memories are from Mr. Murphy's P. E. class at "The Big K ". Also he coached our track team to an undefeated season in 1974. Great memories!! Learned a lot about life and competition from " The Big Murph ". Deepest condolences to the Murphy family.

Wayne and I would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Jane, Michael, Dennis, Brianna and all the family. At times like these it is difficult to accept such a loss especially so suddenly. We have to put our Trust and Faith in God and understand that he has a reason for needing Jimmy in Heaven now. We should try to remember that while Jimmy has gone from here and left his loved ones, all of his pain, battles and suffering are over. He is now whole and happy in the arms of our Father in Heaven, and I'm sure that Aunt Agnes, Uncle Ed and Eddie were there to welcome him.

My mother, Aunt "Tweet", used to tell us: "when someone passes, God creates a new star in their honor and we should look to the sky to find the new star. That we should try not to be sad. We should not spend our time longing and upset but remembering all the good times we had while we were together. Think of them and say a little prayer from our heart. All of their worries and concerns are now gone and they have completed their journey of life".

May you be able to look for and find that star and know that Jimmy is happy and whole and watching over you from Heaven.

May you always find comfort in knowing that you can speak to him from your heart and know that he will always be listening.

May you find solace in all of the good times and memories made and shared and may all your memories bring you Peace, Comfort and Strength.

God bless you All.
