During his retirement years, Lou enjoyed visiting many places throughout the USA and Canada. Lou was also able to participate in a few military reunions before medical issues precluded him from further traveling. Two especially memorable journeys stand out: Lou returned to Nebraska to visit the base where he completed his military training during the Forties. Later, he was chosen to travel from Chicago to Washington, D.C., with other WWII veterans on an "Honor Flight."

To each of Lou's family members, I want you to know that you are in my prayers. I was blessed with the honor of being Lou & Carol's neighbor and friend for 10 of the best years of my life. From the first party I hosted at my home in Mount Prospect to the last (and there were plenty) as well as all of the "firsts" that we experienced together, I referred to him as "Sweet Lou Hefner." No matter where he went, Sweet Lou was the sharpest dresser & the classiest man of style that I have ever met. Sweet Lou's class, taste, desire to live life to the fullest & of course his chivalry were all timeless. Sweet Lou was 41 years older than me, but you would never know it. He once told me that he would like to do this or experience that & I told him, Sweet Lou, "whatever you want to do, just tell me & we will do it." From his first Paradise Pup hamburger in Des Plaines, to the Chicago Auto Show, the Wrigley Field rooftop party, the choice seats down the third-baseline at Wrigley Field, the Kid Rock concert in the VIP suite and Sweet Lou's infamous "Open the Bottle Night" party...he was the Toast of every occasion & most importantly, Sweet Lou was happy. He made me happy, he made me a better person. His spirit will forever live in my heart, the experiences are forever etched in my book of memories & I thank God for that & Sweet Lou. Our world's loss is Heaven's gain...Heaven just became a whole lot "classier."
