Roy passed away peacefully on December 1, 2018; he was born May 19, 1930 to Thomas Merrill Hutchinson and Charlotte Newton Hutchinson in West Medford, MA. He graduated from Sanborn Seminary High School in Kingston, NH, class of 1948. In 1951 he moved to Concord to work for Southern NH Typesetting and he and his brother Kenneth bought a 220 acre farm in Canterbury where they raised apples and made maple syrup. In 1967 he and his brother divided the farm. Roy continued to raise apples and syrup. In 1967, he became co-owner of Hazen Printing in Penacook, NH, for 20 years. After selling the print shop in 1987 he did carpenter work for 30 years and continued making maple syrup.
Roy became involved in the NH Maple Producers Association in 1967, serving as Treasurer, Vice President and President and was currently on the board of the Charlie Stewart Maple Museum. He managed the NH Maple booth at the "Big E" for a number of years. In 1984 he became a delegate to the North American Maple Syrup Council and in 1990 became the editor and publisher of the Maple Syrup Digest, the quarterly publication of the Council, a position he held for 24 years.
In 1999 he was selected to represent the NH Maple Producers at the Smithsonian Folk life Festival in Washington, DC. He and a friend, along with Roy's son, Brian built a post and beam Sugar House from timber on his property, which was erected on the Mall. The building now finds a home at the Hopkinton Fair grounds as a permanent building.
He was elected to the Maple Hall of Fame in Crogan, NY in 2003 and in 2010 received the Lynn Reynolds Leadership award from the International Maple Syrup Institute.
In the earlier part of Roy's life he was a Boy Scout leader and planned a number of adventures for his troop, including hiking, fishing and canoeing. Roy, along with his wife, Mary Ellen, enjoyed their many travels to maple meetings, throughout the States and Canada and especially loved the 5 summers they spent in Alaska fishing, hiking and exploring. He loved fishing and hunting with his sons, brothers and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents and his brother William, a son Wayne and his daughter, Lois Peters.
He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Mary Ellen MacCoy, a brother Kenneth and his wife Patty from Bennington; a brother Warren from Sandown; a son Brian, his wife Adrienne, grandson Ethan, granddaughters Jessica and Aurora from Canterbury; a son Ralph his wife Sandra from Berlin; a step-daughter, Dana MacCoy Bishop and her husband Christopher, step grandson Quentin from Canterbury and step granddaughter Kaylan and step great grandson Bentley from Massachusetts; a step-son Eric Wyatt, and his son Elliott from Fairbanks, Alaska, along with many nieces and nephews.
