Charles A. Matteson passed away on Nov. 30, 2018, surrounded by family and friends at home. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a friend to many. He believed absence from the body is to be present in the Lord.
He was born in Gordon, Neb., on Sept. 3, 1928. He was raised on the farm his father homesteaded, after emigrating from Sweden, north of Gordon. After graduating from high school, he joined the Army and served in the Korean War. When discharged, he went back to Gordon. Charlie married Donna Parks and they raised a family while farming.
He eventually sold the farm and moved to Edgemont, S.D., and started Matteson Ford. Charlie had the business for six years then sold it and moved to Wyoming to start his years in oil.
On July 4, 1981, he married Virginia Atteberry, "Jynnie." They had many happy years together. In 1995, they traveled to Alaska to visit their daughter, Cheryl, and stayed. Charlie was always an Alaska dreamer! He worked at Walmart for 19 years.
Charlie and Jynnie enjoyed serving the Lord at the Mat-Su Evangelical Covenant Church. He also enjoyed going for rides to see the mountains and scenery. Old cars, coin collecting, fishing and hunting were also a big part of Charlie's life.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia; children, Cheryl Nichols (Bill), Sharon Roller (Richard), Judi Claussen (Gregg) and Charlie Matteson (Jeannie); 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren; and on Jynnie's side of the family: sister, Terry (Andy) Shumway; nephew, Mike and sons, Josh, Jake and Jessie; nephew, Shannon (Kim) and children, Kaylee and Carson; niece, Tammy (Eric) Holmberg, son, Austin (Tiffany) and Colten and; great-great-nephew, Ronen.
His memorial service was held at Mat-Su Evangelical Covenant Church at 2 p.m., on Dec. 8, 2018.
