SMITH, Jack Edward Age 74, of Butler Township, passed away at Miami Valley Hospital on December 24, 2018. He was born on January 20, 1944 in Mariemont, Ohio to the late Edgar A. Smith and Mary Craig Smith. Jack graduated in 1962 from Vandalia-Butler High School and received a Bachelor's of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Cincinnati. Jack loved music and played bass trombone in both the Butler High School Marching Band and the NCR Band, predecessor to |today's Carillon Park Band. In his younger days he was an avid skier and belonged to the Dayton Ski Club. His boyhood home was located very close to Cricket Holler, and many happy hours were spent wandering through the camp with both his brother and childhood friend Dan Rogge. He was employed at the Inland Division of General Motors and, as a design engineer, held 34 patents. Jack is survived by his son, Rodger D. Smith (Valerie), step-daughters Jennifer M. Wehrs, Sheila R. Wehrs, step-son James T. Wehrs and grandson Leo B. Smith. He is also survived by his brother, Larry A. Smith (Dee), niece and nephew Judith A. Smith and John E. Smith and his best friends Richard Oaks and Dr. Bill Dahling. The family will receive friends 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, January 5, 2018 at Baker-Hazel & Snider Funeral Home 5555 Philadelphia Dr. at N.
