James Fairley Obituary

Published by Porter Loring Mortuary McCullough on Dec. 27, 2018.
James (Jim) Edgar Fairley, the son of the late John Henry and Willie Mae Fairley was born in Fayetteville, North Carolina on June 15, 1929. He spent his formative years in Fayetteville, attending public school. Jim proudly and honorably served in the U.S. Air Force and spent many years in Europe as liaison personnel at S.H.A.P.E. (Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe) based in Belgium, Germany and France, where he met his second wife Mauricette (Sophie) Fairley. Jim spoke fluent French and was also proud of having learned some Armenian. An accomplished jazz musician, Jim played tenor saxophone for local bands in the U.S., Paris and with TOPS in Blue Air Force band for many years, touring Air Force bases worldwide. Quite the showman and vocalist, Jim also served as emcee for the latter organization. During his service, Jim obtained three Master's Degrees in Political Science, Black History and Education from Saint Mary's University and Our Lady of the Lake in San Antonio, Texas. He retired from the Air force at Lackland Air Force base. He became an Educator and a Counselor but will be remembered by many of his students as a beloved teacher of History and Government. Survivors include his devoted wife, Sophie, his daughters Dorothee and Juliette; his grand-daughters, Laetitia and Clara. Two sisters, Sallie Mae Whitehead and Darlene Fairley of North Carolina. A host of other relatives and lifelong, precious friends mourn his passing. The family wishes to thank Jim's care team at Landon Ridge Alamo Ranch Assisted Living in San Antonio. Just found Mr Fairley's obit and I am so sorry I did not know sooner. He was an absolutely wonderful teacher that cared about each of his students and it showed. His example was a big part of why I also went into education. Much love and admiration!

Uncle Jim was full of life and produced a smile on those whose path he crossed. I will always remember his strong go getter spirit. Peace, blessings, comfort and love I pray for you all.

I worked with Mr. Fairley for several years at Anson Jones Middle School and was impressed by his calm demeanor. May the eternal light shine upon him. May he rest in peace!

Dear Fairley Family,
I am a former Holmes High School student. Mr. Fairley was my American History teacher. It was because of him and Mr. Stuart World History teacher that I became a History teacher for Special Ed students. I am retired now. The one thing I remember the most was the stories he told of his lovely wife and girls. He loved all of you so much and was so proud and excited to be your father and husband. He was a great teacher. Not only of history but a role model for a father and husband.
I left San Antonio and and returned to become a teacher. But always wondered what had happened to Mr. Fairley.
I am so very sorry for your loss. I lost my mother in September and my heart is crushed. I can only imagine how you feel at this time.
Best warm regards,
Susan Saenz-Solis

No one could have had a better BIG brother. We were very proud of and loved him very much. I still remember with a little sadness, the holidays that he and the other brothers returned home from the service. He brought lots of happiness to us all. Love you Jim!! Sallie Whitehead
