Roy Curry Obituary

Dec. 21, 1930 - Dec. 31, 2018 Roy Alick Curry passed away quietly in his Edmonds, WA home surrounded by family Monday evening, December 31, 2018. He had recently celebrated his 88th birthday. Roy was born in the cold, wet winter of Grantham England to Noel Henry and Doris Moulsher Curry on December 21, 1930. He frequently suffered with upper respiratory illness as a child and was unhappy not to be allowed outside. Once he fully regained his health as a youth he remained out-of-doors and fully active for most of his remaining life. After graduating secondary school in Manchester, England he was apprenticed as a dentist trainee but found he hated being "all cooped up" indoors. He convinced his family to let him train as a carpenter, cabinet maker and builder. Shortly after WWII ended his family moved to Hazel Grove in Cheshire, England where they opened a Fish and Chip Catering and Eatery. Roy continued to apprentice until the family emigrated in 1947 joining his sister, Kathleen Curry Frederick, who had married an American GI and immigrated to Seattle. In Seattle Roy worked building cabinets and quickly found a knack for management, becoming a foreman while still in his late teens. After work he enjoyed and excelled at roller skating, roller dancing, bowling and restoring old cars. In 1949 Roy married Mary Anna Eakle-Seeley. The young couple divorced in 1956 but the children remained with their father. In 1959 he married the woman who would be the love of his life, Arlene Rae Hebert. Together they raised five children and were married for nearly 60 years. They enjoyed gardening together, but while Arlene was creative indoors, Roy loved to remain outside, walking, hiking, biking, building and fixing "stuff". They made an annual trip to Palm Springs, CA where he hiked and cycled eight to ten hours daily (even through his mid-80s) coming home in time for dinner and a swim. For many years the couple took an additional two weeks traveling to and from Palm Springs through Utah, Arizona and Nevada so that Roy could cycle all along the way. Both Roy and Arlene loved to roam over the western United States although they thoroughly enjoyed their visit to the East Coast when their granddaughter married in Boston. Additionally, they could not resist the call of Canada especially Harrison Hot Springs where they visited often. Although Roy and several friends started and operated Crestline Corporation (later Crest Cabinets) for many years, he always claimed to be "a cabinet maker". He was a skilled tradesman, a successful business owner, and proud member of his local Cabinet Makers Union for 55 years. His artful ability to analyze and maximize stock options were much and jealously admired by those of us who loved him dearly but lacked his expertise. We will all remember Roy for his quick wit, his precise professionalism, his absolute and careful decision making process, the phrases "in other words...." and "you might say..."; his love of teasing, his care in spending those hard earned dollars, his interest in almost everything, his thorough daily reading of the Wall Street Journal and the twinkle in his eye. Surviving are his wife, Arlene; two sons, Alan (Lynda) Curry and Neil (Thomas Eitzinger) Curry; three daughters, Linda (Michael) Ellis, Rita Cleveland and Brenda Holmes; 11 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; two great-great granddaughters; his sister, Jean (Bill) Clark; three nieces and two nephews. Roy was preceded in death by his parents, Noel and Doris Moulsher Curry; a sister, Kathleen Fredrick Zamora; and two grandchildren, Richelle Brady Horton and Michael Cleveland. There will be a Viewing from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 4, 2019 at Beck's Tribute Center, 405 5th Avenue S in Edmonds, WA. A Funeral Service is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at Beck's.
