Patrick Brendan Robert Egan

EGAN -- Patrick Brendan Robert, beloved husband, father, son and brother; trusted colleague; cherished friend; and long-suffering fan of the Chicago Bears, Michigan Wolverines, New York Rangers and New York Mets, died Friday, January 4, 2019, at the age of 42. He passed away surrounded by family and friends at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in his hometown of New York City, following a four-month battle with angiosarcoma. Born in Manhattan and raised in the City's West Village neighborhood, Patrick attended Trinity School and Stuyvesant High School before graduating from Yale University in 1998 with a double major in history and theater studies and as a proud member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. In 2005, he earned his law degree from the University of Michigan Law School, where he won the prestigious Moot Court competition, dominated a prestigious bowling league and a decidedly less prestigious flag football league, and spent Saturdays watching the Wolverines at the Big House. Most importantly, Michigan is where Patrick met his beloved wife Sarah. After college and before law school, Patrick worked as an assistant to the producer of the Tony Awards and then as a congressional aide to former United States Senator Barbara Boxer, the first step in a career dedicated to public service.  After law school, Patrick was accepted into the Department of Justice Honors Program, where he worked in DOJ's Criminal Antitrust Division. After two years there, he returned to his hometown to serve for six years as an Assistant District Attorney in Manhattan, where he was most proud of the two years he spent prosecuting child abuse cases.  In 2013, Patrick became an Assistant United States Attorney in the Southern District of New York, ultimately earning an appointment to its Terrorism and International Narcotics Unit, an event he described simply as the "happiest day of my professional life." According to U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman, "Patrick filled our hallways and courtrooms with wit, laughter, and purpose.  A generous mentor and friend to so many here, he loved the Office with every fiber of his being." Patrick endeared himself to all who passed through his orbit with his astounding intellect, singular wit, uncanny memory, subtle compassion, remarkable work ethic, and unyielding integrity.  Loyal, humble, and naturally self-deprecating, he earned respect and a legion of friends during each new endeavor. A natural leader, Patrick was the catalyst for separate annual gatherings of both his close group of college and law school friends. His prowess with a clever joke and ability to tell a story are legendary, but it is his affection for, and dedication to, those important to him that will be missed most. In 2008, Patrick married the love of his life, Sarah. During the ceremony, Patrick vowed to make sure that Sarah knew every day how happy he was that she chose him.  As always, Patrick kept his promise. Patrick's love of his wife was equaled only by his love of their three children, Conor (8), Molly (5), and Cormac (3), who brought as much joy to their dad's life as he brought laughter to theirs.  In 2015, Patrick and Sarah moved their family to Pelham, New York, where they found a warm, loving community that has been a source of great friendship and support during a very difficult time. Patrick is survived by Sarah, Conor, Molly and Cormac; his parents, Robert and Susan; his stepmother, Bobbi Donin; his sister, Abbe, his nephew and niece, Riley and Michaelagh Nabors; his father- and mother-in-law, James and Phyllis McDonald; and innumerable friends.  A memorial service for Patrick will be held on Saturday, January 12, 2019, at 10:00 AM at the Westchester Country Club in Rye, New York. ?The family would like to extend its deepest gratitude to Patrick's primary oncologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Dr. Sandra D'Angelo, and to the countless dedicated nurses and staff at MSKCC who cared for Patrick during the past four months.
