Donald "Donnie" Wheaton Jr., 62, of Stoneham died unexpectedly on Saturday, January 19. He was a lifetime resident of Stoneham. As a commuter rail conductor on the railroad, Donnie was Local Chairman of United Transportation Union 898B of the South Side. Donnie would help his union friends in any way that he could. Donnie is survived by his wife Kathleen (Mullen) Wheaton; his niece Jill Mullen and her husband, Nicholas Machado, whom he referred to as "his son." Donnie worshipped Jill and Nick's children, his great niece and nephew, Hayden and Cameron Machado, and he meant the world to them. He is also survived by his sister Donna Furman and her husband Michael of Woburn; his sister-in-law Patricia Meyertholen and her husband Edward of Alexandria, VA; his brother-in-law Robert Mullen and his wife Charlotte of Stoughton; his niece Andrea Meyertholen of Lawrence, KS; his niece Kristin Favela and her husband Nick of Nashville, TN; his nephew Rob Mullen and his niece Sarah Mullen of Stoughton; his Aunt Peggy Bukoski and her husband Kenny and their son, Kenny Bukoski Jr.; and his Aunt Mary Jane Mahoney of Stoneham. He is uncle to William Wheaton of Watertown and to the late Michael and Matthew Wheaton and Godfather to the late Thomas Feindel. Donnie is also survived by a large extended family of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins; his lifelong friend, Kenneth Feindel and his wife, Janice of Wilmington. An extensive network of treasured friendships from the railroad, union members and many more friends who enjoyed his passion for football and attending Patriots Games at Gillette Stadium. "Go Pats!" His funeral will be held from the McDonald-Finnegan Funeral Home, 322 Main Street, Stoneham on Friday, January 25th at 8am followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Patrick Church, 71 Central St. at 9am. Donnie, you were such a nice guy in high school. Always a truth sayer. Such a good friend to so many. I was crazy about Larry and you finally told me why he stopped seeing me. Wish I knew where he was or how he was doing now. Loved seeing you as a conductor on the train to Boston.Rest in peace, Don. Until we meet again...

I found a memorial shirt of his in a thrift store. I bought it out of respect, and dare I say I made a good choice. I have no clue who Donald was, but I can say with full certainty that I would've wanted to meet him. His memory will live on within the fibers of this shirt and beyond only the circle of those who knew him.

It is sad to hear about Donnie. I knew him as "Wheatoes". Back in the early '80's when he hung around with the Gunsmoke crowd. We wrote a song around '81 and named it after Donnie. It was called the "Wheatoes Express". I always cherish the participation in that song, and how Donnie inspired us to be creative. He frequented gigs and always helped. He was funny as heck sometimes. Peace to Donnie and his family.

My Pats fan away game compadre along with Kym. I had the best times with you guys and shared so many good times with you Donnie. How many games & years? Since the 1990's. The last game at Sullivan; the tuck rule; the first Super Bowl win. So much success after that. My JD away game partner. So dedicated to the co-workers; always on the phone while we were away. On the phone all the way from Arlington cemetery to the Lincoln Memorial in DC. St. Louis, Nashville with my tooth. Charlotte and the Gentlemen's Warehouse party crashing. San Fran. twice, Muir Woods, Fisherman's Wharf, Buffalo, Charlotte, and finally Tampa with your buddies. You passed in your peace and I'll see you at the next game above. Love ya my friend. Burnie.

I am very sorry to hear of Donnie's passing. I worked very closely with him for 10 years. To me he is an Officer and Gentleman. He cared very deeply for his union constituents and always took time to assist me on various issues.

There are not enough words too state how much of an impact he has had on those who have known him. We should take his lead as we go forth in our lives.

My condolences to his beloved family.

Donnie you were a constant fixture in our home growing up. Always hanging out with Jay. You were there when we lost our Dad and then when we lost our Mom. My Mom suffered from dementia and only recognized her children. When you came to my Dad's wake, and we asked her do you know who this is?she said of course it's Donnie. There is a special place in heaven for you.

Very sad to hear of Donny's passing. He was a good friend and dedicated railroad man. We will always remember the times we shared on the railroad ski trips where he earned the nickname "HEATER". Always smiling and ready for a good time-that's how we'll remember him.

Donnie was my co-worker and a fellow union representative. He was a strong, intelligent, loyal, supportive, cooperative and a supremely dedicated representative and defender of his fellow workers, regardless of their craft. Most important, Donnie was a good friend to Susan and I, always there with a smile and an offer of assistance. We shared difficult times and good times and we had a lot of laughs. We are deeply saddened by his passing. Godspeed and rest in peace Brother.
