Marjorie E. Garrett, a long-time West Side resident who was blessed with two wonderful, unique, love-filled marriages and a remarkably full life, passed away on January 22, 2019 after a brief illness. As one of her many lifetime honors proclaimed, Marge "distinguished herself by making a difference" in this world. Marge was born in Pittsburgh, PA, where she lived until her senior year in high school, when her father was transferred to Cleveland. Marge graduated from Shaker Heights High School. She attended Baldwin Wallace College, from which she graduated in 1949. While at BW, Marge was a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. Her sorority sisters were among her best friends her entire life. Marge was President of her sorority, and in 1948 was voted May Queen of BW. At graduation, Marge was a White Rose Ceremony honoree for her many contributions and achievements at BW. It was at BW that Marge met the love of her life, Bob Fricke, a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity there. They married in 1951, and raised three boys in a strong, patriotic, loving family in Westlake. Marge was at ease with any person in any setting. When Bob's work as Honorary Counsel General for the Federal Republic of Germany for Northern Ohio brought Marge in touch with dignitaries like West German chancellors Helmut Schmidt and Willy Brandt, Marge happily and effortlessly acted as host. Marge loved to speak in public. She also loved Cleveland, and loved showing it off. It was natural for her, then, through her work on the Cleveland Health and Education Museum's Women's Committee, to give tours of the area to visiting business and civic leaders through the Museum's Operation Bus Stop program. Her work at Operation Bus Stop led Marge to create Gourmet Adventures, an exclusive tour company, with her longtime friend Arden Parrish. With Gourmet Adventures, Marge traveled to some of the most spectacular cities around the country and world, providing five-star experiences to her many friends and customers. In 1982 Marge and Bob were named Mr. and Mrs. Westlake for their tireless support of the Westlake schools and community. When Bob passed away from lung cancer in 1988, Marge created and funded the Robert O. Fricke scholarship at BW. In 1993 Marge met widower Dick Garrett, a former Rocky River High School classmate of Bob's. For the second time in her life, Marge met the love of her life, this time a perfect later-in-life companion. Marge and Dick loved to travel and relax in Costa Rica, Naples, FL, and Huron, OH, among other places. They were active members of the Cleveland Yachting Club. Marge and Dick continued to make a difference by creating and funding the Holtom-Garrett Family Professorship in Neurology at the University of Michigan's School of Medicine, and the Holtom-Garrett laboratory for MS research there. Locally, Marge and Dick were Grand Patrons for the most recent renovation of Severance Hall. They were members of the Cleveland Clinic's prestigious 1921 Club, and in 2013 received the Clinic's George Krile Award – the highest honor the Clinic gives for contributions to the Clinic - for their involvement there. Marge was active in the Intown Club, and a long-time member of the Women's Committee of the Cleveland Orchestra. Dick passed away on September 16, 2018, and, having lost two loves of her life, Marge was ready for no more heartache. Through it all, perhaps Marge's greatest love was for her three boys – Bob (Nancy) of Colorado Springs, CO, Tom (Jackie) of Dallas, TX and Wade (Laura) of Chagrin Falls, OH. They blessed Marge with eight grandchildren, whom she adored and who adored their grandma. Marge also was fortunate to have an expanded family through her second marriage that included Dick's three children – Rich of Sarasota, FLA, Marcia Mootz (Lee) of Dallas, TX and David (Donna) of Cumming, GA - and their seven children. A Memorial Service to honor and celebrate Marge's life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 2019 at the Rocky River Methodist Church, 19414 Detroit Road, Rocky River, OH 44116, with a reception to follow at the Cleveland Yachting Club. Contributions in Marge's memory can made to the Robert O. Fricke Scholarship at BW, c/o Baldwin Wallace University, The Center for Philanthropy, 279 Front Street, Berea, OH 44017, or the Miller Family Heart and Vascular Institute, c/o The Cleveland Clinic, 9500 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, OH 44106.
