Diane Martinez Obituary

Published by Porter Loring Mortuary North on Feb. 12, 2019.
It was with great shock and sadness this week that her family and friends learned of the death of Diane Lawson Martinez, MD, on February 12 from a sudden illness following a trip to New York. A psychiatrist in private practice in San Antonio for several decades, Diane did her undergraduate work at the University of Missouri and her medical and post-graduate training in Chicago, graduating the University of Illinois Abraham Lincoln School of Medicine, and completing her residency in psychiatry at Michael Reese Hospital and her psychoanalytic training at the Institute for Psychoanalysis. She also holds an MFA in Creative Writing from the Vermont College Writing Program and has published one novel and had just submitted a second at the time of her death. A Mid-Westerner by birth and upbringing, Diane had made San Antonio her home since 1984, when she came to the city to take a faculty position in Psychiatry at the U.T. Health Science Center. There, she met her husband, Cervando Martinez, also a psychiatrist. Their two children, Alejandro and Pilar, currently live in Austin and Houston, respectively. After their divorce, she and Cervando remained friends and partners in raising their children. Diane was a hard-working professional who also knew how to enjoy herself; she made friends easily and maintained them over the years, traveling with many of them as well as her family, to many different places around the world and enjoying the variety of experiences these trips offered. In recent years, her constant companion was Masoud Rasti, with whom she traveled frequently to Europe and, particularly Turkey, which they both loved and visited often. She was an avid reader, writer, and movie-goer, as well as an accomplished editor for her many literary friends. Deeply rooted in family, she was always a supportive and endlessly encouraging mother to her two children. In addition to Masoud, and her children, Alejandro and Pilar, she is survived by her sister, Gail and her husband, David, and their two sons, Aaron and Cameron, and by her brother, John and his wife, Melissa, and their children, Kerrie, Kelsey and Matthew. There will be a memorial service at Porter Loring North at 2102 N Loop 1604 E in San Antonio on Friday, February 15 at 6 p.m. followed by a short reception. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that gifts in her memory be made to the Center for Medical Humanities & Ethics at the U.T Health Science Center, where she served on the board for many years.

It is my hope that Diane's family can find some peace in the knowledge that she helped so many people through the great difficulties and loss that they experienced in their own life. May all of the comfort and care that she provided to others come back to her family and friends to help them and comfort them through this loss.

When I looked at my calendar today for the upcoming weekend my eyes found our dinner date for March 2nd. Your brother John, Melissa, Masoud, Bart and I were to enjoy a marvelous feast prepared by you. It's still not real and so sad to know that this planned get together and future ones won't happen. I am so grateful to have known you these many years and appreciate the movies, the dinners, the talks about family and travel. You were a high spirited, gifted and accomplished person in many dimensions. I appreciate what a loving friend you have been and will always miss you but am grateful for what we shared. Godspeed sweet Mama!

I am so sorry for Diane's family and loved ones. I was her patient and she is a huge loss for me; i can only imagine the loss she is for those who love her. She was absolutely wonderful. Talented, good, smart, beautiful, strong, kind, and a very good physician. I miss her very much, and she helped me a great deal. God Bless.

Diane saw several of us Air Force psychiatry residents. Working with her was undoubtedly the most valuable part of my training. I talked with her for years after I left San Antonio and saw her when I would return. I will miss her. I am such a better human being and physician because of her care.

Early college was something close to a nightmare for me. My constant state of anxiety tailed by deep wells of depression made every day a challenge. I would find myself outside classroom doors losing my breath, heart racing, panicked. My academic and social lives declined in unison. I didn't have the emotional intelligence or vocabulary to understand what I was going through, nor how to claw my way out of the pit. I sought help from Dr. Diane Lawson Martinez in San Antonio. In working with her the last 6 years, I found myself, my purpose, and a fervor and curiosity for life I once thought was reserved for childhood. In our last meeting at the end of January, I let as much be known to her. Something told me, as we were speaking, that I needed to let her know how much I love her, how much she has helped me, and what she meant to me. I don't know what made me say these things, but we both agreed through tears that I was ready to conclude my regular sessions that had tapered off in the last two years. Today, I found out that my rock in life has passed on. Dr. Martinez was brilliant. She was kind and utterly non-judgemental. No other person in the world has had a greater impact on my adult life than her. May she rest in peace -- and know that she changed surely hundreds of others lives in the same way as she did mine. All my sympathy goes to her family and friends at this difficult time.

When Diane moved to ElDo she became a fast friend for several of us that grew up there...she always had a smile and winning way...she doesn't look a bit different today than the first day I saw her...she and I had Senior P.E. together and we ran laps around the gym instead of playing volleyball...and it was a habit she help me begin and I still do today...I was just thinking about her the other day...just wish I had said a prayer for her then...will be praying for you dear family and friends as I know you will miss her greatly...sue entlicher bolivar, mo

I met Diane not long ago through a mutual friend in San Antonio. It was especially interesting to know her because of her connection with Masoud. We shared several Persian meals together at her house and my friend's house, and she loved to talk of her visiting Iran. My late wife was from Iran. Diane, Masoud, and I connected instantly. My friend relayed the news of her passing a few hours ago. Quite a shock.

Diane was a strong, wonderful mother to her children. She remained a generous, kind step-mother to David, Elisabeth and Carlos Martinez long after her divorce from Cervando, for which I have often sung her praises.
My heart goes out to Alejandro and Pilar.

RIP my friend. Many rich days spent together skiing and cooking with our kids and then others to war torn Bosnia on a bus accompanying returning refugees. Our time spent together holds a dear place in my heart. I'll make sure to share with Pilar and Alejandro those moments - including how you always took them with you, even when they stayed at home.
