Bernadette Crea, 94
Beloved mother, grandmother, was active in Stapleton civic life
Bernadette Crea, 94, passed away on Feb. 13, 2019, at home.
Born Bernadette McManus in County Down, Ireland, she was educated there and finished college at an early age. She went to work for the Government in Belfast, keeping statistics on exports.
Bernadette left there in 1944 and went to London, England, where she worked at United States Army Headquarters as an administrative assistant in G-3 (Troop Movement). While there, she met her future husband, Frank. They were married in London in 1946. She came to New York and worked at The New York Stock Exchange, Department of Member Firms, until she left to raise her family.
One of the highlights in her life was when she became a U.S. citizen in 1951. She became active in local affairs, first as a member of the newly formed Stapleton Civic Association. She was on the board of directors as well as an officer. Bernadette also was a member of the Stapleton Area Board of Community Board No. 1 for 14 years. Troop 42 Boy Scouts of America also elected her as secretary of the Parents Auxiliary.
Mrs. Crea was a long time parishioner of Immaculate Conception Parish and a member of their first parish council. She was also a member of the school's Guild and a delegate to the Federation of Catholic Schools. She volunteered as a reading teacher for many years and a substitute teacher when needed.
She worked as P/T Renting Agent for Grymes Hill Manor Apartments, and later as a secretary at Wagner College. Mrs. Crea was secretary to four deans and her last two years to the Mathematics Department. Her beloved husband, Frank, died in 1990. She retired from Wagner in 1994.
She returned to Immaculate Conception School to teach reading through the use of computers and stayed until she taught someone to take over.
She loved travelling to Ireland to visit family and childhood friends and had been close through the years. She was an avid reader. She spent her retirement years travelling to Ireland and with her grandchildren. When she could no longer drive, she joined her daughter's parish, Our Lady of Good Counsel, so she could attend Mass when able.
She was predeceased by her husband, Frank, and is survived by five children, Brian Crea, John and wife Kathleen Crea, Michael Vincent Crea, Mary and husband Joseph Krische, and Paula Boulay and husband Andre.
The wake will be at Casey Funeral Home, 350 Slosson Ave., S.I., on Friday, Feb. 15, from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church on Saturday, Feb. 16, at 10 a.m. Interment is in St. Peter's Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Our Lady of Good Counsel Church.

Our deepest sympathy to all the family on Bernadette's death. She was always so hospitable when we visited, a great cook, so warm and generous, such a fabulous conversationalist and listener. She took such a genuine interest in people and life that she was larger than life, a true matriarch. Ní beidh a leithid ann arís.

We're very sorry to hear of Bernadette's passing . It seems like the end of an era , uncle joe , our dad Andy and now Bernadette , all within a short time . It's a tough time but I'm sure you've lots of great memories . I can remember Bernadette coming back to Ireland , catching up with family , dad driving herself North to meet with family there . She seemed to enjoy her Irish connections . We'll be thinking of ye all.
Father Patrick sends his condolences also . He has difficulty seeing and hearing these days but he is still very alert . We will bring him to Lavey to attend dad's month's memory mass tomorrow and we will include Bernadette in our prayers there .
Thinking of ye all
