Edward Lally DMD, PhD

LALLY Edward (Ned) T. Lally, DMD, PhD, of West Chester, PA, passed away on February 11, 2019. His beloved wife, Karen S. Lally, DPT, was by his side. Born in March, 1943 in Pittsburgh, PA, Ned grew up in Sharpsville, PA. He received his bachelor's degree (1964) and DMD (1968) from the University of Pittsburgh, where he also earned a Varsity Letter in football. He also earned both a PhD in Immunology (1978) and a Certificate in Oral Pathology (1973) from the University of Pennsylvania. Ned was a distinguished and well-respected faculty member of the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine for almost 5 decades. He had an extensive research career investigating oral health. His current research focused on the molecular mechanism of the most important toxin in the oral cavity. Along with advancing science through his own work, Ned helped to launch the research and teaching careers of those PhD candidates and Dental Students who trained under him – a great measure of a scientist and faculty member. Ned, Capt., DC USN (ret), also served our country in the United States Navy and Naval Reserve. He entered service in 1964 during the Vietnam Era. He was deployed (1990-1991) with Fleet Hospital 15/20 (FH15/20) to the Persian Gulf in support of the First Marine Expeditionary Force during combat for the First Gulf War. In 1995, Ned retired from the Navy at the rank of Captain and as the Commanding Officer of FH15/20. In addition to his wife, Ned is survived by his children, Brian E. Lally, MD (Marcella), Sara E. Lally, MD (Patrick C. Barth, MD) and Caitrin A. Lally, Esq.; cherished brother of Karen Meck (John) and William Lally (Karen); dearest grandfather of six grandchildren, Nora A., Ruthanne C., Patrick J., Sean E., Thomas R., and Riley E.; adoring uncle of Thomas Meck (Candice) and Meghan and Enzo Lally; and many cousins. Ned was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Ruth Lally, and his brother, Brian Lally. Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate Ned's life on Saturday, February 23,, 2019. Born in March, 1943 in Pittsburgh, PA, Ned grew up in Sharpsville, PA, the son of a public school guidance counselor/head football coach and a homemaker, the late Thomas and Ruth Lally. He was all-state in football and played in the Big 33 game as a senior. After receiving numerous acceptances from elite colleges, including the Naval Academy and the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn), Ned chose the University of Pittsburgh, where he received his bachelor's degree (1964) and DMD (1968). During this time, he also earned a Varsity Letter in football. Ned's collegiate football career included the historic 1963 season, where the Pitt Panthers went 9-1, and finished 3rd in the nation. Of most importance, Ned met his true love, Karen, at a dance his sophomore year and they were married in 1967. Ned then went on to earn both a PhD in Immunology (1978) and a Certificate in Oral Pathology (1973) from UPenn. After completing his PhD, Ned joined the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in 1971 as a teaching fellow. His promotion to the rank of Professor of Pathology came in 1991. For almost five decades, Ned maintained the reputation of a distinguished and well-respected faculty member in the dental community, and he had an extensive research career investigating oral health. His current research focused on the molecular mechanism of the most important toxin in the oral cavity, which cohorts in the scientific community have referred to as "his best science ever." Along with advancing science through his own work, Ned helped to launch the research and teaching careers of those PhD candidates and dental students who trained under him – a great measure of a scientist and faculty member. Ned, CAPT, DC USN (ret), was extremely proud to have served our country in the United States Navy and Naval Reserve. He entered service in 1964 during the Vietnam Era. He was deployed (1990-1991) with Fleet Hospital 15/20 (FH15/20) to the Persian Gulf in support of the First Marine Expeditionary Force during combat for the First Gulf War. Ned was known to be "a calm and controlled leader with a skill at managing a diverse group of people and a vision of where the hospital should go," as mentioned by John Norris Childs III, MD, FACS, CAPT, MC, USN (ret). Last year, Ned and Karen celebrated their 50th anniversary with family trips to the Bahamas and Costa Rica. Those adventures will always be cherished in a salute, "Lally Lally!" (which is in reference to the Bud Light "Dilly Dilly" commercial series for Super Bowl LII). While Ned was very humble about his own achievements, he was extremely proud of his three children, Brian E. Lally, MD (Marcella), Sara E. Lally, MD (Patrick C. Barth, MD) and Caitrin A. Lally, Esq. One of his greatest accomplishments is that all three of his children are alumni of UPenn and pursued postgraduate degrees. In addition to his wife and children, Ned is the cherished brother of Karen Meck (John) and William Lally (Karen); dearest grandfather of six grandchildren, Nora A., Ruthanne C., Patrick J., Sean E., Thomas R., and Riley E.; adoring uncle of Thomas Meck (Candice) and Meghan and Enzo Lally; and many cousins. Ned was known by his cousins as a mentor, who would often try to help and guide them whenever need be. Ned was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Brian Lally. Lastly, Ned will be remembered for his love of his family, intelligence, humor, and his fondness of traveling, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh sports, Victory Brewing Company's Golden Monkey, and Irish limericks. As one of his favorite cousins, Bridget Green, said, "Ned had a twinkle in his eye that always reminded you that, no matter what, you were loved just as you are. That will never be forgotten."
