I was one of many Marines stationed at Camp Pendleton, California who was fortunate enough to be invited into the McLaran home in Oceanside, California. In 1976-1977, I was young, homesick and impressionable. This family took me in and treated me like family, planting a seed within my heart that later led to my accepting Jesus Christ as my Savior. The McLaran's lived a Christian lifestyle that I missed growing up. Chuck and Kathy expressed patience, love, kindness, hospitality and willingness to talk things out. Like the time Mike backed the family pickup into a small car that we could not see because of the camper shell on the back of the truck. On Thanksgiving Day, the McLaran's delayed their meal to wait on me to get to their home from base. Mr. McLaran is a man who I admired and have tried to emulate. He is truly an American hero!
