Joe Dunham Obituary

Published by The Healy Chapel Funeral & Cremation Services - Aurora Facility on Apr. 13, 2019.
Joe Dunham, 80, of Aurora, passed away April 13, 2019. He was born March 17, 1939 in Springfield, MO, son of the late Austin and Elsie (Clay) Dunham. He grew up in Nixa, MO where he had a paper route with his cousin, Jim Dunham. He enjoyed his motor scooter and was active in music and theatre in Nixa High School where he graduated in 1957. After high school, Joe went to Southwest Baptist College (now Southwest Baptist University) where he was active in music, student-led religious activities, and was voted "Most Humorous", receiving an Associate of Arts Degree in 1959. Joe graduated from Oklahoma Baptist University in 1961. His major was history, but he fell in love with his minor of philosophy. Although he thought his career path would lead to the pastoral ministry, his philosophy professor urged him to do some graduate work in philosophy before attending seminary (he never got to the seminary.) He received a Master of Arts in philosophy from Oklahoma University in 1963. Joe did some additional work in philosophy at Northwestern University before coming to Aurora College (now Aurora University) to teach part time in 1964 and then full time in 1965 as professor of religion and philosophy. He was the Senior Fellow for the Wackerlin Center from 2006 – 2010, when he retired. While at Aurora University Joe was a popular professor. Among awards he received were the Marcus Trumbo Excellence in Teaching Award in 1979 and 2005 and the 1990 Alumni "Spirit" Award. Joe received an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters in 2007. Although Joe's main profession was teaching philosophy, he remained active in the pastoral ministry, serving as Pastor at Bethel Community Baptist Church for more than 15 years and then as Assistant Minister at New England Congregational Church for 23 years until his official retirement this spring. Joe is survived by his wife, Ida (Muskrat) Dunham of Aurora; his children, Melanie (Mark) Greenberg of Naperville, IL, Elizabeth (Gary) Slotnick of Champaign, IL, Phillip (fiance' Melissa Angio) Dunham of Chicago, IL and Richard (Mika Ogiwara) Dunham of Schaumburg, IL; daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Ang of Chicago, IL; his sister, Nancy (Jim) Shankle of Oxford, MS; grandchildren, Joshua Greenberg, Zachary Greenberg, Ben Greenberg, Austin Slotnick, Rachel Slotnick, Chieko Dunham, Isabella Dunham, Miranda Dunham and "extra" daughter, Faye (Steve Miller) Codding and their daughter, Ramsey Miller of Decatur, GA as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Along with his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Katherine Rebecca Greenberg. Visitation will be held on Monday, April 22, 2019 from 2 PM - 8 PM at New England Congregational Church, 406 W. Galena Blvd., Aurora, IL 60506. Funeral services will be held at 11 AM on Tuesday, April 23, 2019 at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to New England Congregational Church at newenglandchurch.org or Aurora University at aurora.edu.

While I had several excellent professors during my time at AU, Professor Joe Dunham was the best. He was a passionate teacher whose classes were thought provoking, informative and entertaining. Its been many years since I graduated from AU, but I will always remember Joe Dunham. May he rest in peace.

Professor Dunham, I have been journeying through my old college years and you came up as one of my most influential professors.

As I looked you up, I found out that you are no longer in earthly body. I am saddened that I wasn't able to speak to you once more to let you know how great you were as I journeyed life as a young person, I am grateful to know that you are in a better place.

You always remained non-biased in our many ethical classroom debates and I appreciate that about you. The love of God oozed through your pores although I had no idea that you knew Jesus at that time.

I'm sure you will be greatly missed by many. May you rest in heavenly peace! My sincerest condolences to your family!

My condolences to the Joe Dunham family on the loss of such a sweet man. I was an adult student when I first met professor Dunham back in 1999 at Aurora University. I remember him fondly as a caring teacher and an eloquent speaker. Such a loss.. Mary F. S.

I didn't know Joe, but through his daughter Melanie, I have come to know what a great man and human being he was. He was and will always be loved by people whose lives he touched. May his soul rest in peace and give the whole family the strength and courage to reflect on the good memories he's left behind.

Was saddened to hear of Mr. Dunham's death. I took two of his classes at Aurora College and learned so much more than just philosophy. He was a great supporter of women's sports. I am so glad I was able to talk to him at the university's homecoming in October of 20018.

I am so sad to hear about Joe passing. I have many fond memories of our lively conversations all those years ago when Melanie and Beth and I were in high school and college, fond memories of the way I was welcome in your home, sharing meals and conversations and the piano. You are all in my thoughts.

Joe was a colleague at Aurora University and a dear friend. I feel so privileged to have had him in my life for nearly 50 years. His life was the epitome of integrity and love towards others. I will miss terribly our discussions and his great sense of humor. But his life will continue to be a model for mine, as it has been for so many others.

Mr. Dunham was the true definition of what Aurora(College) University represented. There was never a person I met who didn't admire and think highly of him. His dedication to education was endless. And his dedication to his students to attain success was always his main goal. He was one of the most compassionate people I have ever met. I am honored and privileged and humbled that I was able to attend AC in his life time. At the peak of his enthusiasm for teaching and learning. God Bless his soul and my heartfelt prayers to his family and all who loved this wonderful gracious man.

Mr. Dunham was one of my favorite instructors at Aurora University. One of the advantages of attending a small college was that even though I only took Philosophy from Mr. Dunham, he always knew me by my name. He was such a man of kind and Christian inspiration, I always sought him out just to say hello whenever I returned to campus. He leaves a legacy behind of AU's motto of Character and Scholarship.
