We just learned of Paul's Passing. So very sorry to see this news. It's been a few months but my father Everett Bergmann and Paul were old buddies! Claire your beautiful painting of my late mother Carole has warmed all of our hearts for the last 10 years. We love you and are thinking of you and all your family.

I am sorry to hear of Paul's passing. He had a huge influence on me when I was just starting out. We worked together in Cambridge from 1983-86, and I learned a lot from Paul, both the nuts and bolts of how to be a lawyer, and more importantly how to treat people and command, not demand, respect. His sense of humor was unmatched. I will miss his wit and booming voice, even though we hadn't talked in a number of years, he left an indelible foot print on my career.

Paul was a cousin by marriage; Paul, his Dad Jim, and his brother Jimmy Jr. were my mentors while I was in law school in Boston in the mid 1960's; any number of times I go visit Paul and Jimmy Markham in the Federal office building. Their guidance and support was significant because I was putting myself through law school. Paul and Jimmy strongly urged me to go to Washington DC after graduation to get some experience in Federal government legal matters; Paul even got me an interview with the Chairman of the agency where I worked several years. It was not unusual for Paul's Dad "Big" Jim Markham to take me to dinner in DC to "continue my legal education". My sympathies to the Markham for the loss of Paul; he was a great man, mentor and one helluva lawyer!;

I had just joined a small law firm on Congress St. in Boston in Aug. of 1987 after several years as an ADA in Middlesex County. Paul rented the office right next to mine and he introduced himself to me and shortly became a mentor, greatly helping me adjust to private law practice. There were many a late Friday afternoon when we would just talk about the practice of law, current events, sports (especially during football season) and life in general. I truly enjoyed the time I spent with him...he was a giant of a man and helped me immensely for the years I was in practice in Boston.

Paul F. Markham Esq. is and will always be a guy who I will always think of as Woggins, and my Dutch Uncle. His generosity was exceeded only by his kindness. His impact on my life and my family cannot be described. Although he was a "bigtime Attorney", you would never know it. If he saw a friend in need he always stepped up and handled it. All along the way he always maintained his sense of humor which was infectious. Many of his jokes I still use today, and I get bigger laughs.
His commitment to his family, his friends, his neighbors, and his faith are something that all of us should do our best to emulate. He was a great man who affected many of our lives and many more that we will never know of.
Nothing says it better than his Mass Card:

"Let us see ourselves as you see us,
That we may see you as you have promised
And be fortunate according to your word:
Blessed are the pure of heart,
For they shall see God."

RIP

Paul was my "big brother" from the time I was about 5 and he started dsting my dear sister. It took a while to figure out what a Brother In Law was but I alwsys loved going to their home. Paul was loving and kind to me and loved to tease and joke. Later, my own kids hoto know him and he was always a favorite. He held a special place in our whole family and was alwsys a source of advice and vommon sense. He will be dearly missed.

Paul was my mentor when I began to practice law in 1974. He had a great presence in the courtroom and tortured many prosecutors. His wit and fellowship were unparalleled! Just a warm and wonderful man. I'm sure we will all miss him.

My sincere sympathy to the Markham family at the passing of Paul. I have memories of Paul, who I served with at Coast Guard Air Base in Salem, Mass. in 1953, Paul was a Storekeeper at the Warehouse accounting for the cargo planes coming and going from Argentia, Nfld. A great personality and marvelous sense of humor. May he rest in Peace in the Hands of the Angels

As a child, I can remember my mom talking about going to watch my Uncle Paul from time to time in court. As a child I never understood the gravity of his work- he was simply my uncle. As I grew up I began to understand more about his commitment to his profession - and appreciate his keen intellect. But most importantly, I knew and appreciated that he loved his family deeply. I know he will be missed greatly and I only hope the memories will give some comfort during this difficult time.

Paul was a valued friend and occasional co-counsel over several years during my law practice, providing his insights and defensive strategies in difficult criminal tax cases. As a former United States Attorney, his skills were in high demand and his work with me was as much due to our growing friendship as out of professional curiosity or challenge. He was a remarkably confident man, whom I admired greatly, and were it not for a surgery scheduled for July 17th, it would have been my honor to pay tribute to his memory personally. My sincere condolences go out to Paul's family.
