Marceline "Marcy" Pennington Obituary

Published by Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service & Crematory - Greenwood Chapel on Jan. 10, 2020.
Marceline "Marcy" Marie Sluss Pennington, 68, of Indianapolis, Indiana passed away on January 10th, 2020. Marceline was born in Greenwood, Indiana on February 17th, 1951 to Harold L. Sluss and Mary Marceline Smith. As a child, she attended Greenwood Community Schools and graduated from Greenwood High School in 1969. She then attended Indiana University-Bloomington, where she was a member of the Alpha Epsilon Phi Sorority. In 1973, Marcy graduated with her Bachelor's of Science in Health, P.E. and Business Education; she proceeded to teach for 47 years in a variety of capacities. Her legacy touched students at Indian Creek, Perry Meridian, and Southport High Schools, wherein she was awarded Teacher of the Year, and at the University of Indianapolis where she served as a professor of accounting. Marcy became a friend to everyone she met, and she felt blessed to work alongside colleagues that she considered family. She was a passionate advocate for all children and educators, and her positive energy and contagious smile will be missed by all that knew her. It is no wonder she won the Miss Congeniality award in Greenwood, Indiana in 1968! Marcy is survived by her loving husband, Brad Pennington, her son Luke (Taylor) Pennington, her daughter Casey Marie (George) Pennington, her granddaughters, Louise and Charlotte "Charlie", and her grand-dog Tonka. She is also survived by her two sisters, Kathy Bernard and Diana Blauvelt and their children; in addition, she leaves behind her close community of cousins, whom she loved so dearly. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 15th, 2020 from 3-4pm at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service & Crematory, 481 W. Main Street, Greenwood Indiana, 46142. Visitation will be held following the funeral service from 4-7pm. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you donate to Marcy's Scholarship for underserved and underrepresented students entitled "Love Like Marcy Scholarship." Marcy's career focused on students who were too often forgotten and left in the margins; her life's work was to make them visible, heard and powerful. Her scholarship will continue to impact lives. Please make checks payable to Southport High School and in the memo, please write, "Love Like Marcy Scholarship".

My name is James Williams and I did not have the pleasure of meeting Mrs. Pennington (Mrs. P). Yet, I have had the privilege of being the recipient of her belief in all students.

My wife Lacrecia Dodson, in 1981 was bused over to Perry Meridian Middle School from the Brightwood Township. She encountered Mrs. P in the 11th grade accounting 1 & 2 class and she got an A. Mrs P encouraged her to take Accounting 3 & 4 and she aced those classes also. My wife did not believe she could do 3 & 4 but Mrs. P did and pushed her in taking the classes.

My wife has been hooked on accounting and knew that was the career she wanted to pursue before she graduated high school as a result. She moved to California, graded Sonoma St (BS) & U of Phoenix (MBA) and has been a Sr. Accountant and a Controller for a prominent Community Foundation in Marin County.

Thank you Mrs. P for believing in my wife and pushing her beyond her own belief. Now our youngest son (22), who is interning in Indianapolis this summer, is going into the field of Education to teach. Who knew?

My family and I have known Marcy and her family for years. We have known few others like her. She was a wonderful example of what it is to be a teacher and was truly loyal and most loving to her children and husband. She brightened any room she would enter with her positivity and humble and gracious personality. No doubt she has had a tremendous impact upon those she has taught over the years and certainly on her children. Without any doubt or question, south Indy as well as the world is a better place because of this truly wonderful and beautiful, inside and out, human being. Thank you Ms. Marcy for bringing your family into our lives and for all you have done for us, for your family, for your students and for literally anyone that was lucky enough to be touched by you. Part of you remain in your children to carry on and no doubt when you entered the Kingdom of Heaven, the Lord Himself looked upon you with a smile while He placed His hand upon your head and said,"well done good and faithful servant!" You were simply the best and we will always Love you and never forget you...

I was part of the SHS faculty in the English Department and IDEA when Marcy came to join our staff. I remember her as a creative and dedicated teacher who sought to challenge her students...and sometimes her colleagues...to improve and grow in their skills. She was lively and energetic and very proud of you, Luke and Casey. May you be sustained by rich memories and comforted by God's peace and promise, and remember, the love of a good mom lives on in her children. Prayerfully for you all. Donna Wilson

Even though I only saw Marcy at our GHS reunions after our graduation in 1969 I will remember her as a very kind and thoughtful classmate who always had a smile on her face. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.
