Steven Haeger Obituary

Steven David Haeger

Born: March 19, 1952

Died: October 8, 2019

Steven David Haeger, age 67, a resident of Bay St. Louis Mississippi, died Tuesday, October 8, 2019, at home.

He was born March 19, 1952 in Geneva, Illinois, the second of three sons to Robert C. Haeger and Natalie "Twinks" Haeger of Wheaton, Illinois.

Steve grew up in Wheaton, graduating from Wheaton Central High School. He went on to Illinois Wesleyan University, majoring in Physics and graduating in 1974. During summers of his college years, he drove the large excursion boats on Lake Geneva in Wisconsin. So it is no surprise that with his love of water he moved on to get a masters in Oceanography at the Florida Institute of Technology.

From there he moved to southern Mississippi where he was to live the rest of his life, primarily working for the Naval Oceanographic Office as a civilian. He specialized in the analysis of ocean currents.

The family legend is that he owned just one sport coat, which he had to wear when he went to the Pentagon to tell the admirals what they might be facing with amphibious landings.

Steve had many interests. He was a boat-builder. He was a second degree black belt in tae kwon do (Korean martial arts) and a musician, playing drums and guitar as he grew up.

He is survived by his son, Jeffrey Haeger of Gulfport, Mississippi, his devoted wife, Laife Haeger of Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, two brothers Brad (Jan) Haeger of Mill Creek, Washington and Bob Haeger (Kate) of Highlands Ranch, Colorado.

He was preceded in death by his parents Bob Haeger and Natalie ("Twinks") Haeger.

A memorial service was held on October 26th at the Edmond Fahey Funeral Home in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi.

Steve was a genuine friend. He was such an intelligent man but just as funny. He was always pleasurable and comfortable to be around. When Steve visited the rule "mi casa es su casa" became the unspoken "my refrigerator is your refrigerator". We miss those visits so much. He will always be remembered as just a nice guy and will live on in all the stories we retell.
