I have so many fond memories of our summer visits to Murray. One of the highlights of our visits was always our special visit with Uncle Gillard and Aunt Gretchel. Uncle Gillard taught so many wonderful life lessons just by being himself. Smile often...I will only remember him with his smile which I think may have been permanent! Care for others...I have heard countless stories through the years of his big heart and how he helped the residents of Spring Creek by volunteering and spending time with them. Keep a positive attitude...Uncle Gillard was so much fun! He taught me to water ski on Kentucky Lake! Be patient...Uncle Gillard had a calm and patient way about him that made others feel peaceful. Live life to the fullest...although I am sure so many of his own peers had gone before him, he kept on living life by helping others and doing the most he could to make this world a better place. I am so proud that he was my uncle and I will cherish him in my heart forever. Rest In Peace Uncle Gillard.

Glen and I were saddened to hear this news. Popeye and Gretchel were such wonderful neighbors when we lived next door to them. We have many fond memories from those 10 years. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all for your loss.

My heart breaks. I wish I could have seen and talked to him more...especially the bible. God has a great warrior now. He will be missed. So sorry for the family loss

Cannot begin to tell you how sad I am to hear this news. Have so many wonderful memories of him and your mom and his many acts of kindness through my years growing up. He was a natural master of stories and always had that ever present smile. My thoughts and prayers are with you and all of the family. God certainly gained a angel and I have no doubt he will be with your mom again.

My mother was a resident at Spring Creek from 2008-20014. Popeye was her buddy. When I showed him a picture of my mom as a young woman, he said "she looks a lot like my wife did at that age." He brought my mom iced tea every morning and he sat in her room and they reminisced about "the good old days." He was a sweetheart and we all will miss him terribly. Man I'm gonna miss you! Dancing in the sky... you always told me how getting old wasn't fun! Look at you restored and renewed in the Lords house. Love you Popeye

I grew up on 15th Street and was always stopping in the station. My grandmother would drive 10 miles just to get gas there. Loved Popeye. Sorry for your loss. He was a part of Murray history.

For several years I attended the Gleaners Class at Murray First UMC with Popeye. He was a delight to talk to. He told me about his station, and we frequently discussed car matters after class, but Popeye cared about people more than cars. I was amazed at how many people he knew, and it seemed that whenever anyone in our class asked how someone was doing, Popeye knewusually because he had visited with or talked with the person recently. I will treasure his memory and try to follow his example.
