Karen Stern Obituary

Published by Porter Loring Mortuary McCullough on Apr. 13, 2020.
KAREN L. STERN February 21, 1959 ~ April 13, 2020 Karen L. Stern, age 61, passed away on Monday, April 13, 2020 in San Antonio, TX. Karen was born on February 21, 1959, in San Antonio, to parents, Benny Ham and Natalie Feagin. Karen met her husband, Dan, while working at USAA, which she, at times, referred to as the prison (jokingly?). But Dan certainly benefited from her time there, as she made him the happiest man on earth. She retired from USAA after 30 years with her last job working in a support role to the CEO and Board of Directors. She established many special relationships during those 30 years. Karen was a large personality and could be the dearest, most loyal friend. She was also artistic, remarkably creative, colorful, and outspoken. She loved to entertain by planning, organizing and throwing parties for every occasion. She truly loved having family members together on holidays at, as she called it, Rancho Not So Grande. Karen loved many things, bright colors, clothes, cowboy boots, ice cold beer, cheap red wine, but her greatest treasures were her husband and her children. She was so proud of her husband and always shared how lucky she was to have him. And though she may have complained a bit about not liking soccer (actually she did not like it), she went to many matches and tournaments, even when it was hot, to cheer Landry on. After soccer there was plenty of volleyball, basketball (where she would cheer "Knock 'em down Landry) and band. Karen did not know an end around from a tight end, but she committed many hours to supporting Kristian in his football playing career, including mastering the art of tailgating at UTSA games. Karen did not create the term helicopter parent, but she vigorously embraced the concept. Karen had an enthusiasm for fund raising as demonstrated by working at and later running the Sangria booth at NIOSA, chairing the Witte Game Dinner after serving on several different committees, and her work on the Cattle Barons Gala benefiting the American Cancer Society. But her favorite projects were those raising funds for the school band and the athletic department. We are confident the band leaders and coaches remember those experiences quite well and may still be hiding. She was preceded in death by, her mother, Natalie Feagin grandparents John and Jackie Ham and grandmother Irene Morlandt. Karen L. Stern is survived by her father, Ben Ham and his wife Sharon; her loving husband Dan Stern; her son, Kristian Stern, his fiancé Jamie Lee Turner; her daughter, Landry Stern; her sister Kelly Ham and many nieces and nephews and other honorary family members. Karen had great compassion for those in need and with that thought please remember her in any small way such as giving a delivery driver an extra dollar as a tip and more specific remembrances may be made to Roy Maas Youth Alternatives or the San Antonio Food Bank. Karen did not want a formal "funeral," so when possible, we will have the Day of Karen with lots of ice-cold beer, cheap red wine, and loud rock and roll music. Announcements will be sent when a date is set.

I´m truly saddened. I just heard today about her passing. I worked with Karen at Usaa and we took painting class when we were younger. I loved her big personality and her stories. Danny blessing to you and the kids for your loss. She was loved and will be greatly missed. I´m sure she´s throwing a party in heaven for each new comer with her boots on in celebration.

I hadn't heard about Karen... I am really sad to hear about her passing. Karen was one of my first team leaders (over 30 years ago when I was fresh out of college), a mentor and a dear friend. I picked up many work traits and sayings from her that I still hear myself repeating to this day. She was both wise and outrageous. But mostly a loving friend who I am so glad had such a beautiful life with Dan and the kids. I miss you, Karen, and feel blessed to have known you. I will be happy to have many Karen Days in your honor.

After hearing about Karin's passing just today, I wanted to express my deepest sympathies and condolences to Dan, Landry, and Kristian. As your longtime neighbor, I used to love seeing the "pig" out in front of your house decorated for every occasion of the year. It always brought a smile to my face. She will be truly missed.

My heart and mind can barely process the loss of such a wonderful person and dear friend. Karen was so very special. Kind, funny, incredibly smart, always told it like it was, and there when you needed her. Every time we talked she would ask about my sons and my family, and I knew she truly cared. I loved her calls to check in with me, even when she jokingly rubbed in the fact she was retired and I wasn't. She had a heart as big as Texas and would do anything for anyone, especially friends in need. And you couldn't know Karen and not know how much she loved Dan and how happy he made her, or how much she adored her children. She was an incredible, proud mom. It breaks my heart to say goodbye but my faith helps me to know that she is smiling and peaceful...and I know likely shaking things up! I will miss her terribly, but she'll always be in my heart. I will think of her often, but especially when I see beautiful art, amazing cowboy boots, colorful hats, ceramic pigs, anything Alamo Heights and UTSA, and so many other fun reminders. Love and prayers to Dan, Kristian, Jamie, and Landry, and all her family. I am so very sorry for your loss. Love and miss you Karen.

I just learned of Karen's passing today. This world will not be the same without her but heaven is grander for sure! Her personality was big but her heart was bigger. I was on the receiving end of her generosity and compassion. Prayers for strength and peace for her family and all that knew her.

Karen was the kindest person. We worked together at USAA in CEO Support. I will miss her telephone calls to check up on me to make sure I was doing fine. When I mentioned how I dreaded driving downtown for Federal jury duty, she volunteered to take me down and pick me back up in her Jag when done. I will never forget her. Love and prayers to her family.

It is with great sadness that I learned of Karen's passing. She was very proud of Kristian playing football at UTSA. One day we crossed paths in the hallway at USAA and I asked how he was doing. She said she talking to him just then and handed me her cell phone! She told me to say hi. My sincere sympathies to her family.

Karen, as your pesky little sister who tagged along with you and tagged along with your friends...I didn't talk til I was 3, my mom took me to a specialist, he observed us and said she talks for her, meaning Karen talked for me... Well, that sure has changed... There are so many memories over the years.. Her favorite band was KISS, which she got to see with Landry in September and would wear her KISS T-shirt a lot at home..Dan was a Loving Husband and they did almost everything together..Her love of horses and her love of the Ranch.. She loved her husband Dan, her 2 kids, Kristian & Landry and loved her dog Bella and her previous dog Reyna...I just wish we had more time...She was very talented Artistically and could through great parties and events...I Miss you Karen...

Karen along with a group of friends graduated from UTSA together. We later ran into each other working at USAA. She was famous for her larger than life personality. She had a unique gift of drawing you in and making you like her even though she was one of the most outspoken individuals I have ever met. You always knew exactly where you stood with Karen. I remember that Jaguar with the "Karin" personalized plates. She loved her family and will be missed so much. My condolences to all the family. She was a candle extinguished way to soon.

I'm so very sorry to hear this. I knew Karen for many years at USAA and it's incomprehensible that her earthly light has been extinguished. I know she want be resting in peace as there are still parties to plan, folks to uplift and cheers to lead. Bless you Karen, until we meet again.

My heart was heavy to learn of the passing of my former USAA colleague, Mrs. Karen Stern! Colorful beautiful spirit who by her BIG generous heart helped change my life for the better! Leave it to Karen to throw the best Halloween Parties and volunteer at a company rodeo to get roped into having a cigarette whipped from her lips...and her Sangria booth at NIOSA was like none other...I will always treasure those good times and memories of Karen. My prayers are for the Lord to comfort Dan, Landry, Kristian and her family at this time of great loss! Rest In Peace beautiful Angel. Until we meet again, Heavens gain is our loss!

I, as many others of her friends, will miss her greatly! She always brought a smile to those she encountered (unless she was pressing about a missed due date...) and the world will be a bit lessened without her candle shining bright.

Such a shock for me. Karen and I worked together at USAA and enjoyed tailgating before the UTSA games. She knew everyone, invited everyone into her circle, and just made the world a better place. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Dan, Kristian and Landry, my heart goes out to you. I cannot imagine the emptiness you must feel, but may the fact that your wife/mom filled many hearts with happiness, replace a small part of your grief. So many good memories of my friend, Karen (chamaca, as i called her). Her larger than life presence still has me at a point of disbelief where I am finding it difficult to process the loss of my friend. Although her presence now is in a different form, I know she is watching over you guys with Pride.
God bless.
