Raymond C. Davis. Our beloved husband and father died at the age of 93 on May 20, 2020 in Westlake, OH. He was married for 73 years to his high-school sweetheart Betty (nee Quinn). Dear father to Susan Porter (Wayne D.) of Brecksville and Deborah Davis of Metairie, LA, he was a loving grandfather to Rachel Joyeux (Frederic) (nee Gibson) of St. Paul, MN; Lesley Gibson and Harald Kadaroesman of New York City, NY; and Kathryn Poche and Victor Cobb of New Orleans, LA; as well as great-grandfather to Emrys Joyeux and Alistair Kadaroesman. He was brother to the late William Garland and Jean Davis Joyce, as well as uncle to many. A longtime resident of Avon Lake, OH, Ray grew up in Pittsburgh, PA, attending Peabody High School and befriending several of the original Pittsburgh Steelers in the early 1940s. He enlisted as a Radioman Third Class in the United States Navy, serving in the Pacific from 1944 to 1946. He then trained to be an air traffic controller for Trans World Airlines and later the Federal Aviation Agency, where he became a crew chief and manager at the FAA's Oberlin, OH facility. He was awarded a commendation from the U.S. Department of Transportation for saving the life of a private pilot caught in a storm. After retiring from the FAA, he and Betty moved first to Venice, FL, then later to Spring Hill, FL and Ashtabula, OH. Ray and Betty travelled widely, taking numerous trips to Europe, Hawaii, Australia and other places. Both were enthusiastic golfers and he especially enjoyed crossword puzzles of all types. Ray and Betty enjoyed their friends and life in Avon Lake so much that they returned in 2001, living there until moving to Brighton Gardens of Westlake in 2018. Ray and his wife were avid fans of Avon Lake High School Shoremen football from the 1960s on, as well as all things Ohio State University. It was rare to see him outside without wearing an Ohio State Buckeyes cap or jacket. He loved attending Avon Lake High School and Ohio State Football games whenever he could, staying to watch through the worst of weather. He was a 32nd degree Mason, a longtime member of the Avon Lake United Church of Christ, and a devoted supporter of the Salvation Army Ray valued his family above everything and was devoted to his wife, daughters and grandchildren. It was rare that he didn't play "Gotcha last!" with one of his grandchildren or leave them laughing at his jokes. He believed in the value of being honest in dealings with everyone and was known for his quick wit and hilarious sense of humor. A Memorial Service to be planned will be announced on our website. 440-937-6175 www.buschcares.com
