Dear Mrs. Hall, Tommy, Billy and particularly, Stacey -
I am very sorry it has taken me this long to learn of Mr. Hall's passing, and to let you know how sad I was to hear of it. I will always remember his wonderful and personal skills as a host, and his kindness and hospitality; the man just KNEW how to make people feel at home and comfortable, and how to enjoy a great meal!! Every meal I ever had at one of the Hall restaurants was flawless (well, if not the wait time), and I knew that your Bill had a big hand in training each of the chefs, wait, and hosting staff. But whenever I was at the Chophouse - I always felt extra special, always welcomed and important, particularly because I was pretty well acquainted with Stacey (who was my student about 100 years ago). I will always remember having a wonderful dinner with you both, Stacey and her Grandmother (dinner with 3 fabulous ladies!), and how much fun it was. I'm just very sorry we apparently cannot do that again!
In any event, this brief note is to let you know that you are all in my thoughts and that I send my sincerest sympathy to each of you. I truly hope we will all meet again, someday.
With sympathy and affection, I remain,
Yours,
Prof. Denis W. Keyes

Jeanne, I am so sorry to hear of Bill's passing and for me to respond so late. I just found out today. As you know I first met you and Bill in 1976 in Sarasota and we have been friends ever since. Bill undoubtedly was one of the greatest hoteliers, restauranteurs, entrepreneurs, and hosts of our era. He was genuine, fun, socially adept and up to any challenge and a person to be counted on. He was a great leader and accomplished so much yet he was humble and cared deeply for his employees. He believed everyone mattered. He has always been my hero and I am certain Jeanne you were his angel, at times not an easy task. I think of you both often and now especially thankful to have seen you both in Charleston not that long ago. He had an enormous impact on my life and I'm sure the same is true for many others. I will miss him. If I can help in anyway please let me know. Roger.

Dear Jeanne, Billy and Tommy,
I got up pn August 18th and something was wrong, I wasn't myself, I was sad, and I didn't know why, there seemed to be a dent in the universe I didn't know about that was impacting my day. Then, turning on my phone, I got the news, Bill Hall had passed. I felt it before I knew it. Bill Hall was that impactful. I and my entire family are heartbroken for your family.
I learned fundamental business and personnel lessons from Mr. Hall, as I called him, and knowing him (and the entire Hall Family) has had a huge impact on how I approach my business and personnel life. As a young doorman at the Hyatt on Hilton Head that Bill managed with command, assertiveness and grace, he taught me if your job was to pick up cigarette butts do it great and to my horror he was picking up cigarette buts, my job, to prove his point. He didn't use words he used action a lesson in business I never forgot.
My personnel life lesson I learned from him was maybe even more valuable, the importance of family and friendship, even friends that sometimes you didn't see for months or years, he showed it in how he would great you with sincere joy reserved for family you would not have known that months or years had passed if you were an observer of these distant reunions.
My thoughts and prayers are with you Jeanne, Billy, Tommy. The Drum Family's hearts are full of love for your family and full of great memories as well as our undivided thoughts and prayers.

Judge Blatt first introduced me to Bill when he was managing a hotel at Hilton Head not far from the Judge’s house. From that day to this, I have never known anybody who brought more joy to more people than Bill Hall. I have always thought the most important thing a person can do in life is to make other people happy. Bill certainly did that every day.
In doing so, he gave us much more than his superb restaurants. He gave us the most precious thing he had to give: his family. His memory will live on through them.

My heart goes out to the entire Hall family, not just Jeanne, Tommy, Billy and Stacy, but all of the employees and staff that were an extended family to the Halls. I have so many amazing memories of time spent at Halls with this family. I was lucky enough to spend time outside Halls with Bill and Jeanne also. This is a man who will be missed by so many people and in ways we cannot count. The community of Charleston has lost a treasure. Words cannot express how deeply he will be missed by Jack and I. Prayers to the entire family during this time.

I have only met Bill in passing when entering his restaurant, but the hospitality he showed my wife and I is something I will never forget. Halls is my favorite restaurant in the world, and it is because of the service and love that is shown as soon as you walk through the door. Bill and his family have made so many occasions extra special because of the love shown. I am so sorry to the family for your loss.

Bill and I have know each other since we were five years old. We spent time in our youth in Sausalito and never did lose contact with each other over the years. Bill was the masterful host. He was a gentleman and was the life of the party. He will always be remembered by me as a true friend and will be missed by all of us who knew him for such a long time. A toast to you Bill.

I was saddened to hear of Mr. Hall's passing. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. He was a great man who was very generous and gracious. I had the pleasure of meeting him and his entire family when they first opened their restaurant. Julian Smith introduced me to him as we made many trips to the restaurant. I also had the good fortune to be involved with him and his family with so many events he sponsored with the bridge run and the children's hospital. He will be missed by so many people and I feel fortunate to have known him.

My condolences to the entire Hall family. Marty and I met Tommy on our first visit to Hall's celebrating buying our house in Summerville. We met Bill the second time because Tommy made sure we met his dad. Everyone took such good care of us each time we visited. A very fond memory is Bill joked with me when he found out we shared the same birth date but not the same year. He never forgot, which absolutely amazed me! He called me his birthday buddy. I feel blessed to have met and interacted with this very special man. ❤

My wife and I are deeply saddened to hear of Mr. Hall's passing. I first knew Bill Hall when I worked at then Hyatt on Hilton Head Island, SC in 1976-80. It was my first assignment out of college. At that time, Bill was the Director of Sales and I was in the Hyatt Management Trainee program. It was when I served as "manager on duty" that I got to know Mr. Hall. For some reason, he took a liking of me and coached me in the various duties of that position.
Mr. Hall left Hyatt to join Silverado Country Club in Napa, CA. Not too long after, he called me out of the blue and asked if I would like to join him at Silverado. I was of course flattered and knew he thought highly of me. I as well was always impressed by his support and interest in my management development. He made me a generous offer as Executive Housekeeper, and soon I packed my bags and drove out to California.
During my tenure at Silverado Country Club, I worked directly for Mr. Hall and got to know his wife Jeannie and at that time very young red-haired "Billy". As others have described his hospitality style and high standards of excellence, those were certainly his characteristics at Silverado. He turned that resort property around with his drive for excellence and superb Sales skills.
When I left to take another position with another company, he threw me quite the going away party (he was famous for those) and a "newlywed" celebration ( I had just married my wife Nita). It was exactly what he would do for those who worked for him and were loyal. One of his famous phrases when celebrating was "spin the wheel". Well, I'm sure he's spinning the wheel now in Heaven.
I learned much of true hospitality and what excellence meant from Mr. Hall. Despite being out of touch with him and his family over the years and miles, I will never forget what he did for me and my career.

The human condition is larger than the neighborhood, the region, and the country. It stretches from antiquity and will continue to the expectations of imminent time. The process of our short lifetime is to reconcile the profound meaning of humanity. It is to each of us our job to live life well.
My friend Bill Hall found the real treasures of life in the simple gestures of genuine friendship. Few pass through as he has--with purpose, kindness, and strength of character. He graced the earth but touched the sun.
May God bless his family.

When Mr. Hall was in the restaurant and you would stop and speak to him he was the most gracious gentleman. It seemed that he had all the time in the world for you. He will always be missed but his spirit will be at the restaurant with us. It is a pleasure and an honor to eat at Hall's Chop House because that is how we feel when we walk in the front door, the Hall family makes you feel special. It is our number one restaurant. May God strength the family as you go through this time of loss and you are in our prayers.
