Adams Sherman Hill, M.D., of Concord, MA, passed away January 7, 2021, at home. He is survived by his wife Judith Morris Hill; daughter Martha Hill McNiff, Sunapee, NH, and granddaughters Laura Gibson, Leigh Gibson, Paige Gibson, Amy Gibson, and Addy McNiff. He was predeceased by a sister, Frances Lipp, Ft. Collins, CO, and his adult daughter Alison Hill. He was born on December 11, 1927, in Boston, MA spending his youth in Cambridge, MA, where he attended Shady Hill School. He subsequently graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy and then from Harvard College in 1949 with study concentration in history. Post-graduate studies were completed at Western Reserve University School of Medicine, followed by an internship at Colorado General Hospital, Denver, and a medical residency at Buffalo General Hospital, N.Y. He then joined the hematology research team at the University of Utah School of Medicine, Salt Lake City. After three years of research there he married Judith Allen Morris and turned to clinical medicine, practicing hematology/oncology in Yakima, WA, for 36 years. He was remembered there for bicycling between home and office and between hospitals, and not the least for his compassionate and respectful relationships with patients and professional colleagues. Because his years practicing medicine included serving a Mexican immigrant population, he learned to speak Spanish and had opportunities to keep his fluency in French up to date as well. Throughout their lives he and his wife Judy enjoyed traveling to Mexico, where they absorbed the cultural life of Guadalajara, and particularly that of smaller towns. His facility with the language rewarded the couple with experiences they would otherwise not have enjoyed. They spent many other vacations bicycling and sea kayaking on the West Coast. A love for reading, writing stories and honing his language skills was lifelong. Over the years he thoroughly enjoyed his daughters and granddaughters. His life lessons for them were often couched in stories he made up. He introduced to them the joys of the sea and the lakes. His young New England cousins recall expanded family vacations at Squam Lake, NH, where they boated and he led them on rambles in the surrounding hills and tantalized them with ghost stories. In 2000 he and his wife retired to Concord, where he always preferred being called "Sherman" or "Mr. Hill" and not "Dr. Hill." Individuals and groups in Concord who have benefited from his scholarly leadership include the Emerson Reading Circle and the Shakespeare Reading Group. During retirement in Concord he frequented the library, kayaked the three rivers in every season, attended West Concord Union Church worship and study groups, hiked and walked. Throughout his youth, his professional life and in retirement, Sherman demonstrated a life of grace and insight and compassion. A small family memorial event service is planned, with a later service to be announced.

Dr. Hill was a special gentleman, teacher, a truly compassionate doctor and person. It was a wonderful experience to work with him, nursing at his office and in hospital. Learned a great deal from him at IMAY. He took the time to treat everyone with respect and humor. His Patients
were given thoughtful guidance and care. They loved him like a friend. An honor to work with.

At the age of 16, living on Franklin Park in Yakima, I had the good fortune to meet and get to know Dr. Hill. Because of the force of his personality alone, I was inspired right then to go to medical school, become a practicing physician and return to Yakima to practice. It was a terrific career and I have Dr. Hill to thank for it. I'll always be grateful to him for his inspiration.

Although I worked with Dr Hill for a very short time when he was with Internal Medicine he will always remain one of my favorite people. I answered phones when I started and he called me to get another physician on the line. I said "of course, and this is Dr???" He said "I am Dr Hill and you have 5 days to learn my voice". I was young and intimidated, not knowing who he was. That night I was leaving for the night and the coat closet was right by his office. I grabbed my coat and said "goodbye Dr Hill" he said "bye and who are you?" (He couldn't see me) I said "this is Roselle and you have 5 days to learn my voice". He loved that and we had such a great relationship the remaining time I worked there. He was an amazing man.

I started my Surgical practice In Yakima in 1984. Sherm was one of the people that I most admired as a colleague during the time our careers overlapped. My wife, Wendy Eider ( passed away 2016) was a Rheumatologist who worked closely with him and always admired him. He was a superb Physician and human being. I also remember his daughter Martha gave swim lessons to our young daughter Jessica back when. We also had the good fortune to be neighbors with his Family on Barge in Yakima. I am sure that there are endless fond memories for his Family to enjoy.

Judy, I didn't have the honor to know Sherman as well as I knew you, but my husband, Don, a pediatrician in Toppenish, recalls him as one of the most revered physicians in Yakima. Don says he was humble, gentle and generous in spirit. And very, very smart. Don remembers one case where he asked Sherman to see a teenager from a farm worker family, an athletic boy with a blood cancer. Not all physicians in those days were eager to consult on a patient like that because the chances of being reimbursed were low. But Sherman didn't hesitate. No wonder he was so eminently respected. We send our heartfelt condolences.

It has been a privilege to learn about his deep roots, his medical legacy, and his faithfulness to family, Emerson thought, civility, and community values. I was so sad to hear of Dr. Hill's passing. I was an RN at Yakima Memorial Hospital and knew him and his patients on my floor. Once one of his leukemia patients died during my night shift. He wanted to be called so I called him. In the middle of the night he came to the hospital. He went in to see her, and then he walked the darkened hall with head bowed. I have never forgotten that.

Dr. Hill was very meaningful to me throughout the 38 years we both worked in Yakima's medical community. As a student nurse, I learned the gentleness of his spirit as he modeled end of life care. I experienced his humor when my blood pressure was too low to donate blood. He never made me "run the stairs" but would proclaim loudly "Of course Miss Strader can donate. Have you ever seen a healthier specimen?" He championed nurses and treated us as valued team members. I have many more treasured memories. He enriched the lives of all he encountered. Swift journey, gentle soul.

We felt honored to know the Hill family for many years. Dr. Hill was a gracious man, who worked to remember everyone's name in the hospital, and greeted each person by name. Truly a special person!

When I graduated from nursing school in1980 Dr Hill was one of the first physicians I worked with. I assisted him with my first bone biopsy. He was so kind to the patient. The patient was in her early forties, a single mother with small children. Sadly she was diagnosed with leukemia. I was with him when he discussed her diagnosis with her. He was so compassionate. He was always kind and such a gentleman to the nurses I worked with. I looked forward to rounding with him when he visited his patients. He took time to explain things to a young nurse. He was always patient with me. When he was no longer practicing here at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital I missed seeing his mischievous smile. My heartfelt sympathy to the family during their time of loss.

Dr. Hill took time just to chat with my Mom. When new decisions were needed in her long battle with breast cancer, she would tell him to decide for her, saying "you're care has gotten me this far, trusting your judgements from here out". And he did. Betty, Yakima

Sherman was always a gentleman and his intellect and clinical skills were respected by his fellow physicians, hospital staff, and patients. His love of languages, history, and literature was evident in his conversations and his ever friendly greetings are remembered.
Some people stand tall among us and Sherman was one of those. His obituary reflected well on him- please accept our sympathy.

I am a retired RN who worked with Dr.Hill in Yakima for many years.
He was the finest doctor I knew, a favorite of the patients and a real gentleman who always treated nurses with respect which was unique in my experience. I saw him often riding his bike around Yaima. He was always cheerful and I never saw him loose his temper with anyone, also unusual.
No flower ever blossoms forever but some are so lovely that they are never forgotten.
I am retired many years but I have never forgotten Dr Hill. My name was Murphy then and I worked with a gal whose last name was Peckham, now deceased. When Dr Hill arrived, he always greeted us cheerfully with Hello Murphy and Peckham. ALL anAriis well if you are here

I fondly remember Dr. Hill, allowing me to run up and down the stairs at Red Cross, getting my blood pressure up enough to donate blood. That was around 1965 and 66 in Yakima, WA. Condolences to his family.
