Peter Sloan Obituary

Published by Cavanagh-Patterson Family Funeral Home - Media on Feb. 25, 2021.
Peter W. Sloan, 86, of Downingtown, died peacefully on Thursday, Feb. 25, 2021 at Aventura at Pembrooke Nursing Home in West Chester, Pa, surrounded by family in his last hours. He was born on June 18, 1934 to the late Dr. James A. Sloan and Dorothy Wolf Sloan of Johnstown, Pa, and was the fifth of eight children. He is survived by his loving wife Eileen of 52 years; his brother Stephen W. Sloan of Hollidaysburg, Pa; his four children: Christine (husband Kevin Monteleone), Diane (husband Michael Thase), Peter, and John; three grandchildren: Charlotte and Carly Thase and Austin Monteleone; plus three step grandchildren, five step great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and grand-nieces and nephews. Peter was a graduate of Westmont High School where he lettered in football as a member of the outstanding Westmont varsity football team. He received a bachelor's degree from Youngstown State University where he played football and worked as a sports reporter. He received a master's degree in history from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. As a young man, Peter worked for the US Park Service as a ranger and guide, a librarian, and a high school history teacher. He then worked for the US Postal Service for 25 years and as a substitute teacher for another 10 years before retiring. Peter was active as a parishioner of Saint Joseph's Church in Downingtown and a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus (council #7208) and 4th degree member of the Chester County Assembly. A lifelong learner, he cultivated many diverse interests including a love of history, literature, art, religion, travel, boating, and athletics of all kind. His greatest passion was for his family, and he treasured family togetherness above all else. Be it a large wedding, an extended family reunion, or an informal summer picnic, "Peter W." could be counted on to be present and was often the last to leave! He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered at future family gatherings. A private viewing for family and close friends will be held on Thursday, March 4, 2021 at 10am followed by a funeral Mass at 11am at Nativity BVM Church, 30 E Franklin St, Media, PA 19063. A memorial service and luncheon will be held at a later date when larger gatherings are safer. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation (https://donate.bbrfoundation.org). The Funeral Mass will be live streamed at the link https://www.oneroomstreaming.com/view/authorise.php?k=1614474065521675

I remember Pete from the many years he attended our
Thanksgiving-IHM Group. Looking at the records, Pete used to attend two retreats per year giving him 45 total retreats. For Thanksgiving-IHM Group he had 26 years. That is a whole bunch of quality time our group has spent with Pete. Just wanted to pass on my condolences to Pete's Family and thank you for sharing Pete with us.
