John McArdle Obituary

Published by John F Givnish Funeral Home - Academy Rd on Apr. 10, 2021.
John E. McArdle of Holme Circle Philadelphia and Melrose Park passed away on April 10th, 2021 at the age of 66. John was the son of the late Francis J. McArdle and and Anne E. (Mick) Lopez. John was the loving father to Michael R Stieffenhofer (Dana) and John F. Beecher. John will be greatly missed by his caring siblings: Francis J. (Denise), Mary Anne (Jeanne), Matthew W. (Carleen), Patricia Davis (the late Michael) and Edward (Dawn). John will be missed by his many nieces, nephews and was a mentor to many over the years. He was a kind and noble man who did his best to do right by everyone who knew him, most especially children. John grew up in the Holme circle section of Philadelphia and attended St Jerome Catholic grade school, Chestnut Hill Academy and Temple University where he received his Bachelor's Degree in Education and Health Sciences. He would use that effectively for decades shaping the lives of countless students and players alike. John was the loving partner and husband to the late Susan L. Schwarz for over ten years. They enjoyed many trips to Cancun, Mexico, the Jersey shore and many sporting events, especially Phillies games. He was also a supporter of the Arts and regularly attended area theater productions and was a supporter of the Philly Pops. John was always involved with all levels of sports and officiating. Beginning with a strong high school sporting career at CHA he would go on to captain the Temple Owls baseball team to the college world series. He began his coaching career at Father Judge HS and would go on to lend his expertise whenever he could. John was involved with coaching at Crispin Gardens, CYO officiating, American Legion umpiring, PIAA umpiring both HS and collegiate level, Treasurer of the PIAA, Director of the Carpenter Cup, Professional MLB umpires as well as being named to Chestnut Hill Academy, Temple University, City of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania sports Halls of Fame. John supported all aspects of Chesnut Hill Academy as it was such an impactful time in his life. Aside from all of the coaching and teaching that he did, he also attended every school event, fundraiser and game that he could. John especially loved going to the plays at CHA that were put on by the CHA Players Production. It was quite routine to see teams that he coached attend mandatory plays as well in order to show support for their fellow classmates. They broke the mold when they made Coach Mac and to say that he will be sorely missed by many doesn't even begin to cover the scope of the number of lives he touched and influenced both young and old throughout his life. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to John's Life Celebration visitation on Friday April 23rd from 4PM-9PM at the John F. Givnish Funeral Home (10975 Academy Rd, Philadelphia 19154). Services and internment will be private. Services will be streamed live on the John F. Givnish FaceBook on Saturday April 24th at 11AM In lieu of flowers, donations to John's memory to Springside Chestnut Hill Academy in memory of John E. McArdle Class of '73, (500 W. Willow Grove Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19118), Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and Shriner's Hospital would be greatly appreciated. Goodbye Coach McArdle. Although I wasn't able to be there, I watched the service and was brought to tears by the love shown to you, my cousin. You touched so many lives in a positive way. I remember the time spent together, as children, before we moved from Philadelphia. To my cousin John - - you are loved.

As so many before me have stated, John was truly one of a kind, whose fierce loyalty to family and friends meant that there was nothing...NOTHING...that John would not do for you if you were in his circle. His uncommon mixture of toughness and kindness, and more importantly the knack of knowing when to display either, is something at which I marveled. He was a dear friend, and Amanda and I were crushed to learn of his passing. You lived an exemplary life, my friend, and you are already sorely missed. Save me a seat at the bar...

I was a "lifer" at CHA, and even as a First Grader, I knew who John McArdle was. Fast forward several years, and while I was a Varsity Baseball player there, I recall John often stopping by to watch games or offer coaching and encouragement at practice. Post CHA, Summer of '81, and I was playing American Legion ball in Philadelphia. It was the semi-finals of the City Championship when I stepped up to the plate to lead off the game. All of a sudden this booming voice bellowed from behind the Umpire's mask, "Glenny Barrie!! How are you doing??" I instantly knew it was John and it brought a huge smile to my face. The opposing catcher could only shake his head in disbelief. Now here we are 40 years later and John is still bringing a smile to my face even though sadly he is gone. He was just that kind of guy. You will be sorely missed, but I for one know I am a better person for having known John.

Our families knew each other back in the early 60 and 70's. We lost touch with them all but we had such good times with the McArdle family and John. Funny I had not seen him for many years and I was at a friends house heard his voice and laugh and knew him right away. Our family had good times good memories. John was a good man he will be missed by all. Heaven gained another Angel. Prayers from the Dahms Sanabor Family.

Mr. McArdle and my dad, Ron, coached together at CHA for many years, giving me the privilege of being exposed to his great coaching from an early age. His unwavering dedication to his pupils, never giving an inch when it came to the effort required to compete, and always doing things the right way was his code. I was a tiny kid, proud as could be to just be considered a part of the team as the unofficial ball boy, but Mr. McArdle always made me feel valued - even when I repeatedly screwed up running the clock during practices! Every correction was always followed by a wink and a smile.

I grew up to be an athlete and always carried with me the lessons I learned from him. There were many but a couple definitely stick out. One was to never fear your opponent or the challenge in front of you, always meet them head-on. The second, and I feel this embodied the man, was that compassion and toughness were not mutually exclusive. It was possible to compete with the utmost focus and vigor, while remaining a good person to those around you.

I am heartbroken at his passing, but a person never passes, they continue to live on in the hearts of those they touch. And Mr. McArdle touched too many to count. We love you, rest in peace.

The first time I met Coach, he was so warm and smiley and welcoming. He was goofing off with the little kids at the summer camp we both worked, "locking them" between his legs as they giggled and squirmed trying to escape. "This doesn't add up," I thought, suspiciously. Before that, I had only known him as the guy coaching my older brother's high school basketball and baseball games. If you ever saw McArdle during a practice or a game, you know what that means. But I rarely saw that guy when he was off the court/field. He was a big smiley teddy bear and the proudest dad ever of his two boys and his lovely daughter-in-law. He will be so missed.

Coach, may you always have two full pints up in heaven! XOXO

my deepest condolences to john's family. he was an intense competitor both as an athlete and as a coach. beyond that he was genuine caring person, who was always enjoyable to be around. as the basketball coach at Cardinal Dougherty we would always play each other in the preseason. I always looked forward to playing chestnut hill for two reasons; I knew johns teams were always well coached and it gave me a chance to spend some time with John. I will keep John and his family I'm my thoughts.

John,
Still remember our meeting my first year at CHA, intimidating, but we all know you had a heart of gold. We last saw each other at a friend's home about a year or two ago, but was happy I had a chance to chat and hear those great stories! Very sad time for all who knew you not just in the athletic world but for all who called you a friend. I know you are umpiring a great game in heaven! Rest easy John, you will not be forgotten!!!

John was a great school colleague and friend- ready with a smile and always ready to help. He was a blast to have at the faculty lunch table and a true champion of his SCH and CHA lads, from the youngest to the oldest. He could rally his troops with his "jazz trombone" of a voice and he brought spirit, warmth and goodwill to school every day since I began working with him in 1985. What a joy to have taught John and Michael, and to have taught and then work with Dana. John, as the Irish always say (and Hilltones often sing....) "May the road rise to meet you; may the wind be ever at your back, may the sun shine warm upon your face; may the rain fall softly on your fields, and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand."

John was a good teammate at Temple and his dedication to the program and, more importantly, his unwavering loyalty to Skip Wilson, was tremendous. John loved the game and I enjoyed our occasional opportunities to get together to exchange stories. He loved to recount the time when I was the Phillies GM when he was called upon to work a Major League game after the regular umpiring crew was delayed. Although his stint only lasted a couple of innings, it was the big leagues and it was something that he really cherished. I envy the folks who knew John better than I did and who had more opportunities to be around him. People like John enrich other peoples' lives and he will be missed. God Bless, John. Play ball!

I had the privilege to be mentored in the classroom and on the football field by Coach while a student at CHA. He taught us that, believing in yourself, persistence, and hard work will always lead to positive outcomes, in his own unique way. Part Drill Sargent, part story and joke teller, Coach Mc knew exactly when to play each role to get the best out of each of us. Despite all of that, John McArdle taught me something even more valuable. Coach McArdle, along with Jack Plunkett, Ron Colston and many others at CHA showed me that being a teacher and mentor of young people has it own unique rewards that no other career offers. So I followed him into teaching and coaching.

I was fortunate enough to be able to coach football with John at CHA. He was a tremendous teacher and mentor and I learned a lot. In my time assisting John with the offensive and defensive lines, I became a more skillful and polished coach, a better classroom teacher, better husband and father. And for that coach, I am forever grateful. Rest easy Coach, thank you for all that you have done for me and all the young men you have inspired, love and miss you

PS- Im sure there is a Fatty's in heaven so when my number is called I'm looking forward to sitting with you and throwing a few back while you hold court

John coached all three of my sons at CHA. He coached my son, Josh to 1st team All-Interac in Basketball and his career at Yale Basketball. He would join parents after games at a local watering hole and have a fun time. John was a wonderful story teller, a rock of a human and a softie at the same time. A life well lived and well loved. Thanks, John for your contributions to me and my family. RIP

John was an awesome teammate. Always positive, ready to help and a kindred spirit. If you "judged " this book by the cover...your loss! I can still remember the days down at McGonigle Hall, (Temple University) sitting in the bleacher's and John cramming for a test. Holding court and making sure everyone was ready. Over the 4 years that we were teammates to many stories to tell but through it all you knew 1 thing, you could always depend on John. A good life lived... needs to be celebrated not mourned!
