May the love of friends and family carry you through your grief. I was very fortunate to be a member of the West Covina High Basketball team for the 1968-69 basketball season which was my senior year. Why was I fortunate one may ask? Not only was one of the finest teachers of the fundamentals of the game of basketball, besides being one of the finest high school coaches in the history of high school basketball, he was a great mentor to me & others by teaching us life lessons. May God watch over him & bless him. May God bless his family & friends & give them comfort. I miss Coach a lot & I can neer thank him enough for teaching me how to be a better basketball player & human being. Coach was a huge influence in my life as my dad was too. I miss my dad a lot & I miss Coach Barry Porter.

Today is November 19, 2022 and I am just learning of Coach Barry Porter's passing. Although over a year has gone by since his passing I send my heartfelt condolences to his family. I was fortunate enough to be coached by Coach Porter in 1965 and 1966. The dignity and kindness he displayed has stayed with me all these years. In his teaching, he would always be considerate of you as a person. I remember once in practice when we were working out a play and I was questioning its merit. His skillfulness and exceptional patience was wonderfully on display as he took me aside and explained where he was going with the play he had shown us. But what I was most of all left with was the respect he allotted me by not chastising my passion and lack of experience in front of the rest of the team. Quite the gift of a very classy person/teacher. On the practical side of coaching we all were very privileged to have a coach who knew the game so very well. Possibly some of this expertise came from his time under the tutelage of the great college coach John Wooden, who coach Porter played for in the early 1950's at UCLA. From my readings of coach Wooden he was about building character in his students/players as much as asking for their best efforts on the basketball court. In that regard Coach Porter was the perfect protege. Thanks Coach for being a light that lit so many young peoples path.

With sincere respect and admiration, Tom Turner

Great Coach but a better man. Knew him for the 4 years while at WCHS from 1968 to 1972. I believe he was appointed Athletic Director during that time as well. I used to see him walking out to his car occasionally when he had thrown out his back going to the chiropractor. I knew he was in a lot of pain. I never heard him curse or even raise his voice in the four years I was there. God rest his soul.

Dee & family, My wife Barb & I & our family would like to offer our sincere condolences to you & your family regarding the passing of your husband, Coach Barry Porter. Our thoughts & prayers go out to you & your family. Coach was my West Covina High basketball coach in 1968-1969. Coach Porter was a great coach & he was also a terrific mentor off the court for many people, especially me. I will always remember Coach for teaching me the game of basketball & how it should be played. He certainly made me a better player with his coaching. He also taught me valuable lessons of life that I will never forget. Yes, I did have a father who taught me a great deal, having Coach Porter in my life taught me lessons that I didn't learn from my dad. I am truly a better person because Coach Porter was in my life & the world is a much better place because Coach Barry Porter was in it. God Bless you Coach. Rest in peace. You will never be forgotten. Fred Spierer

Mrs. Porter and Dan, I was truly saddened to hear of Coach Porter's passing and want to convey my sincere condolences to you and your family. As one of many who had the privilege to play basketball under Coach Porter, I have always considered myself fortunate to have had a coach who was concerned about shaping us into not only better players, but also better people. Three special memories I will forever hold on to are: working for him in his carpet cleaning business and learning the "tricks of the trade" that I use in my own home yet today, listening to him recite Rudyard Kipling's poem "If" by memory and seeing in his eyes that that the words had a far deeper meaning than just a series of stanzas put to paper, and of his "never ending story" which, of course, never ended, but which he'd tease us with by concluding "well, we'll finish this up next time." Coach Porter was a true inspiration in my formative high school years and I am grateful to God for the privilege of having had him as a part of my life.

Mrs. Porter and family my deepest sympathy is extended to each of you. Coach Porter was an exemplary man. He had so many wonderful qualities. It was always a pleasure to speak with him. He was alway kind and caring. He took the time to listen and offer much needed advice. My prayers are for your family. May you each be able to find comfort in his memories and allow his legacy to be part of who you are. Coach Porter will always live on in the hearts of all he came in contact with.
