Robert Edmund Sumney, 77, of Kalamazoo died peacefully on December 9, 2021 at Vibrant Life Senior Living. Bob was born January 19, 1944 in San Diego, California to Robert Edmund Bishop and Charlotte Katherine (Cook Bishop) Sumney. After Bob's father passed in WWII, his mother, Charlotte married the father he always knew, Maurice Dale "Suds" Sumney. Bob grew up in Kalamazoo and was a graduate of University High School. He attended Ferris State University and then entered the U.S. Marine Corps. Most of Bob's 40+ year career was spent in the family business, Sumney Insurance Agency. For several years during his career in insurance, he was a member of the Million Dollar Roundtable. Bob most enjoyed the years of his life when he embodied his entrepreneurial spirit. He was an early adopter of technology, writing programs and developing software for the insurance and hotels industries. Bob loved entertaining people, making them laugh, telling jokes and breaking out in song. He enjoyed sailing, golf and sports cars. One of his most treasured relationships was with his father, "Suds." The two were avid WMU Bronco fans, attending games, hosting booster events and feeding the teams. He will be remembered for his playful and gregarious spirit and his deep love of family. Bob was formerly married to Beverly Rose Bernard. He is survived by their two daughters, Stacey (Denny) Stickle of Chicago, IL, Tamara (Tom) Mack of London, England; five grandchildren, Paige Stickle, Molly (Daniel) Mahoney, Tommy Mack, Fletcher Mack and Spencer Mack. Bob was preceded in death by his parents. Friends will be received 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, December 14, 2021 at Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care, 105 Capital Avenue N.E., Battle Creek, MI 49017. A service to celebrate Bob's life will be held at 12:30 p.m. following the visitation. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, The American Cancer Society or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

I am so sorry to hear of Bob's passing. I would have attended the funeral but just found out. Bob and my dad, Todd Panse, were good friends for a very long time. My dad also struggled with Alheimer's and Bob was one of the few people that regularly stopped by and took my dad out.

One of my best memories of Bob was on his 2nd wind from Atlantic City to Lake Erie. Suds was onboard too and made his famous chili.

Sending good thoughts to your family from mine. May they both be in a better place, cracking jokes together again.

Warmly,
Sandy Panse Mrachina

To the Family of Bob Sumney:

Even thou I never got to meet any of Bob's Family. My late Husband Jim and I had a special connection with Bob's Mom, (Char) and his Dad, (Suds) who guided him through his life. We were involved thru WMU sports and got to know your Dad thru them. We always enjoyed meeting up with him for some conversation. My many memories and prayers are with you all!

Bob,
As the oldest Cook cousin, I think we all looked up to you and your Mom Char and Dad Suds. My Mother Dorothy loved you dearly. Know that you are with our departed Cook relatives. God's Peace to Stacey and Tamara.

My family and I are so saddened by Bob's passing. We were fortunate to get to know Bob during his stay at Vibrant Life. My mom Pat was also a resident and they developed a special bond almost immediately upon meeting. They shared many meals together, time watching TV in Bob's room and countless outings . Bob was always very protective of my mom and would often share with me his concern over her not eating enough. They had a very sweet, endearing bond and were always laughing and joking with each other. My mom loved his quick wit, protective nature and that smile only Bob could give. His friendship helped my mom through some tough days and knowing my mom had his companionship was always a comfort to our family. My sister, daughters and I were drawn to the same qualities my mom saw in him. We have always thought so much of Bob and he will be remembered fondly. We extend our deepest sympathy to his family.

To the Sumney Family - I have so many fun memories of our childhood at your house. Your dad was so generous with his love and laughter and I am so honored to of been able to experience it. He helped me with my own struggle of losing my dad before I was born. Sending hugs and happy memories!

Am saddened to hear of Bob's passing. My dad Vaughn often shared stories of the harrowing escapades he shared with Bob. Bob also reached out regularly to Dad as he was going through his battle with cancer. A good cousin/friend for sure.

I know he will be missed. Definitely one of the good guys.

Bob, My old friend. A privilege to have known you. Our time in High School will never be forgotten. Football, golf, parties, poker nights and endless jokes. We have traveled different paths but we always try to help others. Say "Hi" to Suds and Char for me. You are in the greatest of hands now. Peace be upon you brother. Your Friend Tom Beattie.
