Joan Franks Obituary

Published by Jeffries & Keates Funeral Home on Mar. 21, 2022.
Joan L Franks, age 91, of Northfield, NJ, formerly of Langhorne, Pa., died March 21, 2022. She was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Harry E. Franks. She was born and raised in Minersville, Pa., until she attended Lebanon Valley College to study Music and Education in 1947. After college, she went on to obtain her Master's Degree in Education from Millersville State College. Joan began teaching Music and directed the Choir at Neshaminy High School in 1951. This is where she met her husband, Harry. She was truly an asset to the Neshaminy music program, directing the choirs, teaching music classes, and providing piano accompaniment for any performing group or musical that asked for her assistance. She took a few years off to start a family, and when she returned to Neshaminy, she taught Kindergarten at Walter Miller Elementary School, and then Tawanka Elementary School, where she became the Matriarch of the "Terrific Tawanka Team." In all, she taught for 42 years at Neshaminy, retiring in 1998. Her husband was the passionate coach of the Neshaminy Football team, so Joan fed the players, washed and sewed uniforms, and became their most loyal and boisterous fan. Notwithstanding the birth of two children, she did not miss a Neshaminy football game, home or away, from 1952 through 1980…28 years! She was inducted into the Neshaminy Football Hall of Fame for her extraordinary contributions. When not attending football games, Joan could often be found sitting at the piano in her living room, regaling many guests at impromptu concerts, with Big Band hits, Tony Bennett favorites, or Christmas Carols. Of all of her achievements and interests, her family was most important. Joan and her husband Harry relocated to Northfield NJ in 2005, to be closer to their young grandchildren. Having been predeceased by her husband Harry, Joan is survived by daughter Bonnie Ann Adams of Fort Myers FL; daughter Joy Longenecker and her husband Paul of Annville, Pa; son Harry E. Franks, Jr. and his wife Ellen of Linwood, NJ; grandchildren Scott Adams, Lori Woodlief, Zachary and Troy Longenecker; Kelsey and Harry S. Franks; and great-grandchildren Conor, Mackensey, and Giannis. The family will have a private graveside ceremony to remember Joan. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to AtlantiCare Hospice, 6550 Delilah Road, Suite 210, Egg Harbor Township, NJ 08234, in Joan's name. When I taught at Tawanka, Joan was the Kindergarten teacher. She was a gifted teacher, and I often thought of her as my role model. We became good friends and were able to enjoy time together after retirement. She was so kind and a marvelous person. My condolences to her family. I will miss her.

My twin sister, Judy and I would like to send our condolences to the Frank's family. We went to Neshaminy and graduated with Bonnie snd Pete. We will always remember Mr. and Mrs. Franks with fondness. We would also like to send condolences to Bonnie on the passing of Pete. We just found out this week that he passed. We will always remember him and what a good time we had at Neshaminy.

When my father read of Mrs. Frank's passing in the paper, he said "Mrs. Franks was a really nice lady." When I said "really Dad?, he answered with such feeling "oh my YES!". The Darden family, with our connections to the Franks family through Neshaminy Langhorne, Neshaminy Maple Point and especially the "Early Birds" golfers at the Middletown Country Club, send our sincere sympathies.

I had the privilege of having Mrs. Franks for kindergarten was well as being in the chorus all through elementary school. She was a great teacher, piano player, and an all around great lady. So sad to hear of her passing. She was one of the people that made Tawanka not just a school but a family. Rest in peace Mrs. Franks.

Mrs. Franks was my kindergarten teacher at Tawanka for the 1976-1977 school year. She made the recommendation to my parents that I go to "Pre-1st" instead of 1st grade the following year. It was the best decision that helped me grow and become the person I am today. Thank you Mrs. Franks for everything. You truly were a treasure to anyone who was lucky enough to have you for a teacher. May you rest in peace.

As the kindergarten teacher at the Tawanka Elementary School, Joan Franks introduced hundreds of children to learning and developed their love of learning. For most of those years Mrs. Franks performed her educational magic twice each day to accommodate the children in the morning and afternoon sessions. She was a marvel in the classroom. I respected and appreciated the contributions she made as a member of the Terrific Tawanka Team.

I'm sure I speak for all of my class of 1959 when I offer sincere condolences to The Franks family. Mrs Franks was my choir director , she was always happy to attend many 1959 class reunions with Harry and later by herself. So many wonderful memories of Mrs Franks! Rest inPeace. ❤
