James Patrick "Jimmy" Dowdle, 68 of Detroit and formerly of Battle Creek, passed away unexpectedly as a result of a sudden cardiac event and went from home to Heaven on Tuesday, April 12, 2022. Jim was born March 8, 1954 in Battle Creek, Michigan, the youngest child of John Francis and Mary Louise (Smith) Dowdle. As a kid growing up in Battle Creek, he knew everything that was going on and was loved by every neighbor within six blocks of his home. He was a 1972 graduate of St. Philip Catholic Central, where he served as president of the Student Council and then attended Kellogg Community College. Surviving are his siblings, Mary Elizabeth McConville of Ann Arbor, Katherine (Edward) Rice of South Boardman, Jeanette (Kim) Halladay of Ludington, John F. (Deborah) Dowdle of Battle Creek, Barbara A. Dowdle of Kalamazoo; nieces and nephews, Sean (Erica) McConville, Kate (fiancé Frank) McConville, Edward (Eva) Rice, John Rice, Patrick (Juliet) Halladay, Andrew (Unver Rustem) Halladay, Cory (Kori) Dowdle, Bart (Janelle) Dowdle, Adam (Stephanie Reed) Dowdle; numerous great nieces and nephews; special friends, Tiffany Nomides, Bob Dantle and countless co-workers, neighbors, friends and his loyal sidekick, his rescue dog, Willow. Jim was preceded in death by his good friend, Bob Bannos; his parents and brother-in-law, James B. McConville. In high school, Jim was employed at a downtown movie theatre in Battle Creek and ReadMore Book Store. His career in food service and entertainment began with Joe Ferrari at the Gaslight Restaurant in Battle Creek. He then moved to Detroit, lived downtown on Jefferson and worked for a Riverfront restaurant lounge. Later, Jimmy was a co-owner of Menjo's in Detroit. For the past 16 years, Jimmy has worked and helped manage Danny's Irish Pub in Ferndale. Jim will be remembered for his love of people, willing to literally give his last penny to someone else in need, mowing someone's lawn because they were not able, or just making someone's life better with his love, hugs and concern. Jimmy was an avid University of Michigan football fan. Jimmy loved opening day in Detroit and always or anytime celebrating his beloved Detroit Tigers with friends and family. He was also a Red Wing's fan, Piston's fan and would occasionally cheer for the Lions. He loved pleasing his customers, with good service, humor, friendship and genuinely including you as a friend for life. Jimmy loved celebrating St. Patrick's Day, birthdays and holidays with family and friends. He had an incredible sense of humor and endearing quick wit. He could light up a room with his laugh and humor. Jim loved his Democratic Party and received a presidential award, thanking him for his leadership in the National Democratic Party from Bill Clinton and Thomas S. Foley. He was also willing to share his opinions about Detroit and Michigan politics. He also knew it was more important to maintain friendships and the love of family and friends than to lose them over political views. Jim loved music, Barbara Streisand, Led Zeppelin, The Stones, Pearl Jam, Roxy Music, and more recently, The Weekend (now the ringtone on his phone). Friends will be received 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 21, 2022 at Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care, 105 Capital Avenue N.E., Battle Creek, MI 49017. A service to celebrate Jim's life will be held at the funeral home 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 21, 2022. Committal and interment will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Battle Creek, Michigan. The service will be livestreamed and may be viewed at: https://vimeo.com/event/2028386 Memorial contributions may be made to any animal shelter near you. Personal messages for the family may be placed at www.farleyestesdowdle.com.

I can't believe that it is almost one year since you left us. You left a void in everyone's heart. You are one of the most kindness, generous, humorous and easiest person to get along with that I have ever met in my life. I always thought that you'd get your wish of moving South one day. Hard working, dedicated, loving and a free spirited type of guy. I am so VERY sorry for your passing and I will always love you and never forget you.

Jimmy, I recently learned of your passing into eternity and was devastated by the news. From the first time we met, you always treated me with kindness, compassion and respect. I admired your sense of humor which helped me through the difficult, emotional and sometimes painful process of coming out as a gay man in what was then a much less open minded society. Over the years our friendship evolved and even on your worst days, or my worst days, I was always happy to see you whether we got a chance to talk or not. I will never forget the good old days of Menjo's when you ran College Night Thursdays nor will I ever forget the days we spent at Danny's when you would quite often cook lunch for me and cheer me up if I was having a bad day. You treated me like a member of your family and I came to think of you as a member of mine. I am grief stricken yet I know you would tell me to Get over it Mary, because that's the kind of guy you were. I love you, I'm sorry I did not get a chance to say goodbye and I will never forget you for all the kindness, love and respect with which you treated me over the years. You made me feel safe whenever I was around you and you inspired me to live an authentic life. Money cannot buy what you did for me as a young gay man trying find his way in the world and I will never forget you. Thank you Jimmy, you were the best in so many ways and the gay community of Detroit has lost a legend. Thank you for all your years of service to our community and may you rest in eternal peace. You taught me so much about being a gay man and what it means to be a friend and I can only hope that someday I will be able to do for someone else what you did for me. You were a life saver. Cheers!

Will always be thankful for the great times when we both lived at Shoreline and the daily lunches poolside at Andy's and the two years you ran the Beach Boy Motel for me in Ft. Lauderdale......and of course the 40 years of friendship and laughter.

Jimmy,
We so enjoyed coming in to Danny's... Chatting with you, catching up with what has been going on with all of us, complaining about some politicians, watching various games on TV, etc. But, whatever we were discussing, it was some sincere caring conversations.

You were always kind, caring, and friendly to us! We will miss You...your smile, that laughter, sharing a few drinks, and at times your sarcastic wit and comments. These memories will live on...
Rest in Peace Jimmy!

Last minute I was unable to attend Jimmy's service, but I did watch it online. It was a lovely tribute and the readings touched my heart. I'm so very sorry for your loss. Thank you for the lovingly-written obituary that shared so much about "Jimpy's" life, loves, and accomplishments. Such a big heart and personality! I will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers.

Per my conversation with John today I am sorry I cannot make it work to be there for the ceremony tomorrow. I hope God Blesses all you Dowdles!

When I think of Jimp, I simply smile! He was that kind of person that left an impression on you that was always positive and usually with a wink!

I recall his wit being quite a bit like Grandma Smith from my trips to Battle Creek as a youth; maybe that is where I got my quick wit?

He always impressed me as being "unaffected." No matter what was happening or whatever he faced he just kept going! Never in a negative way but in an assured confident way.

While some may think he kind of went as a "beat to a different drummer" I think he was "the drummer" and he knew it.

God Bless you Jimp and all those that you brought joy to in your life

I am so saddened by Jimmy's early passing. To all of his siblings I am offering prayers for peace and comfort as they grieve. I regret that we didn't get the chance to reminisce over the many childhood memories that we shared. So many of my happy memories of growing up include him and the rest of the family as well. I'm not surprised that he continued to spread joy among family and friends the rest of his years. I always enjoyed our brief chats whenever we visited our parents. I wish him peace on his journey through heaven and God's grace and love as he enjoys a reunion with his parents and friends who went before him. God Bless all of those left behind who loved and laughed with him often! Keith

My dear sweet James, The last time we saw each other was at the burial services of another dear friend of ours. I always looked forward to working with you at Danny's for Sunday Brunches, & crazy busy St Patty's Day.
I still cannot fathom that you have departed this world. But I know your next journey will be just as full of your laughter, humor, kindness and generosity that you show me and so many others. I look forward to seeing you again my friend in the meantime come around and visit me after you get settled into your spiritual realm.
Love & miss you

My dear cousins,

I am so sorry for your loss of Jimmy, aka Jimpy. I hope I can call him Jimpy on this memorial site, for that is who he will always be to me. His nickname personified him perfectly: the flair, the dash, the fun of him. I love reading about the affection that he engendered in so many people. It is a remarkable legacy. He has left his mark.

You Dowdles are a remarkable clan, full of love and concern for each other. Jimpy was blest to have you, as you were blest to have him. Be at peace! You have been extraordinary siblings.

I wish I could be at the funeral service, but I am in California through the end of the month. I will be there virtually, however, and in spirit as well. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I have known Jimmy my entire adult life and will miss his great smile & laugh. Jimmy helped a naive college boy accept being gay and was instrumental in getting me a bartender gig. I worked with him, then for him, then we both went a different path for 2 years and he hired me again! We both "partied" thru the 80s but have great memories many not in this forum. St Patty's Day was his day! He loved it. One year we worked the night before and decided to stay up(drinking) till Old Shelleleigh opened at 7am. Just our luck we sat at a banquet table with Detroit's finest fire & policemen! I will miss our friend and hold the memories. RIP

We both worked with Jimmy years ago before we moved out of state for some years. Glad we reconnected when we came back to Michigan.
Our main memory of Jimmy was that of a kind loving friend who always brought joy, happiness and humor to everyone he interacted with. Always a sparkle in his eye. What a great laugh. What a good person. He will be missed by all.
Love ya Jimmy.

Oh Jimmy, You were such a joy to know. Always a smile. Always a hug. The world is a smaller place without you. You lit up the room. Always a great day when you were going to be there. I don't know how I will get through a St. Patrick's day without my hug from you. My thoughts are with your family and friends. Such a loss. I will forever love and miss you. Your songbird, Maggie
