Daniel Harvey Obituary

Daniel Harvey of Pawtucket, RI, formerly of Waltham, died peacefully at his home on May 19th with family by his side. Daniel was born in Waltham, a son to the late Gilberta and Joseph Harvey. He graduated from Waltham High School then attended UMass Amherst and later Suffolk University, where he played basketball & baseball. While there, an area baseball scout signed Danny to play for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Unfortunately, after just one year he was released due to an injury. He was then drafted to the Army and served in Vietnam for two years. You always felt Dan's presence in a room with his 6' 4" stature and gift of gab. So, it was right up his alley to be that friendly taxi driver and the bartender who knew everyone's name! Tracy's in Watertown was a hopping place in the 70's and it was no surprise when the jute box played Al Jolson records, Dan sang right along entertaining the patrons. Life would eventually take him to Brewster on the Cape then out West to Southern California where he lived for 25 years. While there Dan drove taxi cabs again, mostly at night, so he could enjoy the beach during the day. He also got more involved in the G.A. program attending meetings and making new friends. When he returned to New England he continued his journey in the program and began mentoring and supporting others, connecting with them even when on vacation in Florida and Maine. Sports was Dan's favorite subject and he could remember scores and statistics better than his own address! But more than that, he was a true gem when it came to his friends and family. Dan was kind, generous and caring. He always kept in touch, sending cards or making calls and helped plan lunch dates at the Chateau to meet up with his old time buddies. We will miss 'The Harv' but will cherish the great memories we all shared thru the years with Danny. Dan leaves his love and soulmate, Jane Cotnoir, who cared for him with much TLC thru his illness, his sister, Elaine of Waltham and brothers: Michael and partner Stephen Solos of Ft. Lauderdale, Brian and wife Kim of Fairhaven and his sister-in-law Arnita of Charlestown. In addition he is survived by cousins, nieces, nephews and so many great friends. He will be especially missed by lifelong friend and cousin, Maureen Quinn of Dedham, MA. Dan is predeceased by his parents and brothers Robert & Gerald Harvey. Please join us for a graveside service on June 22nd at 11:00 at Mt. Feake Cemetery in Waltham followed by a luncheon at the Chateau to celebrate a life well lived but sadly gone too soon. In memory of Dan, donations can be sent to the Waltham Boys and Girls Club, 20 Exchange St. Waltham MA 02451

I was so sorry to learn of Daniel's passing. I didn't know Daniel well nor did I know him for a long time. I signed Daniel up for his membership to the JCC. He never missed a chance to come into my office to say hello and talk with me. We kinda had a bond as I too had lung cancer. I always had words of encourage for him and he so appreciated, or I felt that he did, our conversations. Please know that Dan was apart of the JCC family, and if there is anything we can do to ease your pain, please contact me.

Elaine, Michael, Brian
A long time ago Dan and I played baseball for the "Pittsburg Pirates" in the Waltham Little League and Pony League. I didn't know that Dan went on to play with the major league Pirates too. A bunch of us played lots of baseball behind the old high school across the street from your house. Dan was one of the few guys who could hit a ball on to the gym roof. An Irish toast to Dan: Sure that you were in Heaven a half hour before the devil knew you were dead.
God bless,
Bob Hayes

Danny and the Harvey's were our neighbors when I was growing up. Our fathers worked together at Hood's milk and our parents socialized for years together. Danny was always the neighborhood guy you looked up to because of his personality and athletic skills. I can still picture him prancing down Liberty St. like he was walking on air. We socialized many times together as I got older. Danny never got older looking, he always looked 25 and always acted 25, if you know what I mean!! From our days at the Trough and days in North Conway I will miss his smile, his laugh and his personality. Rest In Peace my friend and it's a sure Bet you are in heaven! The McQuiiggan family, neighbors and long time friends.
