Jayne Bray Obituary

Published by Jeffries & Keates Funeral Home on Jun. 29, 2022.
Jayne Bray passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family at her bedside. Jayne was born to Fred and Gwen Stone at Johns Hopkins Hospital. She attended Woodlawn High School and the University of Maryland. It was after her education that Jayne's journey led her to Brigantine, New Jersey, where she would set roots and start her family. In the mid 1970's, during the rise of the Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City, Jayne joined the organization as a Hostess. She would later become Chairman of the Press Committee and eventually, President of the Board of Directors, 1994-1997. Jayne is survived by her two sons, Ryan (Heidi) and Michael (Kimberly); her sister, Ellen Kallins; as well as her grandchildren, Dylan (age 12), Jocelyn (9), Briar (4) and Brinley (1). No one was more special than her devoted caretaker of 17 years, Gana Batnasunova, affectionately named "Gaga" by Jayne's grandchildren. Jayne's grandchildren were the center of her life. She was frequently seen on the sidelines of Dylan's soccer games, in the front row for Jocelyn's recitals, swimming in the pool with Briar, taking Brinley for scooter rides, or having a movie night in bed with all four of her grandchildren. Jayne loved nothing more than being surrounded by family and friends. Jayne leaves us with many beautiful stories, and a legacy of kindness, compassion, and gratitude, especially through her service as a member of the Charity League. As her friends will attest, Jayne was a deep listener, and she happily gave the gift of attention to everyone who had the good fortune to be in her presence. In 1990, a life changing diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) would quickly become a central theme to Jayne's story. This required the full support of her family and friends. For 32 years, she navigated the challenges of each stage of this neurological disease with perseverance and grace. With Jayne as our inspiration, THE RIGHT NOTES (South Jersey's Fight against MS) was born where we have been able to make a positive impact on the more than 400 people living with MS in Atlantic and Cape May Counties. Because of Jayne, we have been touched by Grace. And, in Jayne's honor, we will keep going. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Jayne's Life Celebration Funeral Service on Monday July 11, 2022 at 4:00pm at Linwood Country Club, 500 Shore Road, Linwood, NJ 08221. A visitation will be held at Linwood Country Club from 2:00pm until time of service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made to THE RIGHT NOTES, a community fundraiser on September 22, 2022, benefiting The National Multiple Sclerosis Society: http://nationalMSsociety.org/therightnotes. Jayne was a wonderful and courageous friend. She helped us understand living in a wheelchair. We saw her at the finish line for the MS bike ride to Ocean City and she was a wonderful inspiration. We will miss your smiling face.

Michael & Ryan - we are so very sorry for the loss of your Mom , your Mom was a lovely woman - always so kind and classy . I will always remember how thoughtful she was when I was a teenager and she would pick me up to come babysit you guys - I was so fortunate of this opportunity and so refreshing to see how you both grew into such fine young men . No words can express or comfort the loss of a Mom but try to find peace in all the memories and love you shared together

Jayne was one of the loveliest women I have ever known. Her outer beauty was complemented by her inner grace. Jayne had a way of making anyone in her presence feel very comfortable and valued. Our days together with the Miss America Organization date back to the 70s. It's an honor to call her my sister.

I first met Jayne over 40 years ago. She was always so kind and thoughtful, and had such a lovely presence. She remained that way throughout the years. Ryan, Michael and families you were so fortunate to have her as your mom. She was a wonderful role model. May your memories comfort you throughout your years.
With sincere sympathy,
