Simmie and Jeanie Coleman Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by L.E. Black, Phillips & Holden Funeral Home, Inc. on Mar. 13, 2026.
Mr. Simmie Lee Coleman, Sr. was born on July 23, 1935, in Butler, Alabama, to John H. Coleman and Arie Mae Ridgeway-Coleman. Jeanie L. Brown-Coleman was born November 18, 1937, in Youngstown, Ohio to Joseph Brown, Sr. and Estelle Evans-Brown. They were married on December 22, 1956, and before their deaths celebrated 69 years of marriage. Simmie transitioned on Sunday, January 25, 2026, and Jeanie transitioned on Tuesday, March 10, 2026.

Simmie was employed by LTV Steel for 26 years until the company disbanded in September 1977. He was a general contractor and serviced the surrounding areas where his work spoke for itself. He was also a partner in the drapery business that he shared with his wife for 50 years.

Jeanie was a self-taught seamstress where she was a partner with her husband in a drapery business for over 50 years. She was an outstanding cook and baker. She loved to read and stay up on current affairs, relax with word search puzzles and of course, her favorite, shop. She was a devoted mother to her four children and loved her grandchildren very much.

Simmie and Jeanie loved the Lord with their whole hearts and souls. They were long term and faithful members of Mt Zion Baptist Church for many years where he served as a Trustee and she served as an usher and sang in the choir. Years later they left Mt. Zion and repositioned themselves at Third Baptist Church where they were also loyal servants.

Simmie and Jeanie leave to cherish their memories: two sons Simmie L. Coleman, Jr. (Brenda), and Christopher J. Coleman, two daughters Shelda A. Coleman-Blackwell and Allison C. Reese (Guy), four grandchildren, Ariana M. Ahyee, Joshua N. Blackwell, Gregory Coleman, Ryan Harrison and one great granddaughter, Gabriella Coleman. He leaves one sister Shirley T. Coleman-Green of Alabama and she leaves one sister Henrietta Jeter of Michigan, and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and dear friends.

Besides his parents, Simmie was preceded in death by three brothers: Willie D. Coleman, John H. Coleman (Catherine) and Roosevelt Coleman (Virginia) and three sisters: Pearline Coleman-Thornton (Zeak), Annie Coleman-Gamble (Willis) and Daisy Mae Coleman-Oden.

Besides her parents, Jeanie was preceded in death by two sisters: Ruby Davis (Dave) and Juanita Trimble; four brothers Orrin Brown (Denise), Joseph Brown, Jr. (Mary), Clarence Brown (Constance) and Hubert Brown (Barbara).

Visitation will be Saturday, March 21, 2026 from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. at the L. E. Black, Phillips and Holden Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will follow at 10:00 a.m.
